Forgive an unknowing question about Whole Home DVR. After resisting for many years, I now have decided to add this capability to my current array of an HR21, H21 and H20. I was told by a CSR the H20 could be replaced by a whole-home capable DVR; minor modifications (some sort of filtering) also would need to be accomplished on the HR21. A subsequent call alerted me to the distinction between a “basic” whole-home arrangement and “advanced” version with the Genie, which exceeds my requirements (such as recording five shows concurrently). If I order the “basic” equipment, does it in fact entail purchase of an HR24 or “non-Genie” variant of the HR34? Thanks in advance!

Whole home is also known as multi-room viewing.
Each of your 21s need to have a DECA [dongle] added so they can network over the coax.
The H20 doesn't have any provision for networking, so it's either going to be replaced, or have to have a filter to block the coax network signal.

The MRV is a $3/month fee.
The HR34 Genie is a different animal, as it has more tuners and can also support RVU clients. This might be what "advanced" was meaning.
There is no "non-Genie" variant of the HR34.

If you don't get the HR34 'Genie", you could get either an HR21, HR22, HR23 or HR24 as your upgrade receiver. You can't specify, you just get what they have on the truck.

And ordering a Whole Home Upgrade from D* should have them swapping out your H20 with an H21 or higher to support MRV. You may or may not be able to keep the H20 and have it deactivated (as a backup). The difference would be if they replaced the H20 you would have a two year commitment...if you kept the H20/HR21/H21 with no equipment swaps you shouldn't have a commitment, just the price of the Whole Home Upgrade plus the additional $3/month for the MRV service.

If a tech swaps the H20 they are supposed to collect the receiver and return to the office.(even the H20 they send them to a place to be recycled and they reuse the access cards)
