Another magazine is focusing on EchoStar and its CEO Charlie Ergen, with an upcoming edition of Fortune Magazine taking a look at the billionaire satellite TV titan and his company's effort to take over rival DirecTV. The article scrutinizes the pending $26 billion merger, and the stiff competition in the satellite TV business since the DirecTV launch in 1994 and EchoStar's DISH Network debut in 1996. The piece, written by Marc Gunther, also dives into EchoStar's history and its start as a C-Band distributorship. And the magazine takes a look at the underdog image of EchoStar and Ergen. "As a little guy, we get stepped on," Ergen says in the article. Ergen compares his battling and competitiveness to his early basketball days. "I was a 5-foot-11 forward," he says. "Which is great preparation for being a billion-dollar company competing against hundred-billion-dollar companies. You learned to step on their foot so they couldn't jump." The EchoStar/Ergen story appears in the Sept. 2 edition of Fortune Magazine.
