I've been playing around with Media Share checking out various ways to get pictures to my HR21-700. Here's another option I tried today.

Phanfare.com

Phanfare provides web-based picture sharing and offers a UPnP media sharing application download. I tried it and it works great with the HR21-700. So, now you can share photos with friends and family and see all those pictures on your TV through your HD DVR. It was simple to setup and configure. Once configured, it shows up as "Phanfare" on your networked PC.

The biggest challenge is still getting your DVR to network to your PC.

The HR21 can only talk to a Windows-based UPnP media server process.
That's why Phanfare's media server app works.
The HR21 app sees it just like it does Windows Media Manager.

It is DLNA-only. Twonky works just fine on a Linux box and does a fine job of sharing audio and pictures. I haven't tried streaming video with it, because I really have no interest in streaming home video.
