More press dodging EchoStar's proposed merger with DirecTV surfaced Wednesday, with speculation that DirecTV executives are now contemplating their own buyout.
The Los Angeles Times reported that executives at DirecTV are positioning their proposed buyout of the company as a better alternative to selling the satellite TV company to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. News Corp. lost the biding war for DirecTV to EchoStar last October, but has surfaced again as the likely buyer if EchoStar can't complete its deal.
As if that wasn't enough pressure, EchoStar CEO Charlie Ergen was scheduled to meet with Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell Wednesday in an effort to save the merger. And after months of not protesting EchoStar and its leader, demonstrators from the National Action Network (NAN) and the National Association of Black Organizations (NABO) said they were back, targeting Ergen as he visited the FCC's Portals office.
Last fall, NAN demonstrators protested in front of Ergen's suburban Denver home, bringing attention to their merger concerns and demands that EchoStar's DISH Network carry The Word, a urban/religious TV network.
