Any First-Timer Tips for Recording NFL Sunday Ticket Games?

2319 Views 26 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  TheRatPatrol
D* and Sunday Ticket are new to me. I cannot watch games on Sunday (work related) so I'll need to record them and watch them another day. Someone told me the Sunday Ticket package is a pain sometimes because of all the extra features that keep popping up on the screen. I assume they mean the "player tracker" and "enhanced games" functions that are shown on D*'s website. If I simply set a game to record like I would any other program, will I have to worry about any of that stuff? I don't want to watch recorded games that have three hours of player stats or something else pasted on the middle of the screen. Please let me know if there is anything special I need to know about to avoid that happening. Thanks.

I work on Sundays as well, so I have to record my Colts games to watch when I get home. Never had a problem with any of the interactive features bothering my recording.

Just make sure you set the recording to end 1 1/2 hours later, in case of OT,etc.
also nfl network shows the best 4 games of the week in an edited 1 hour and 30 minute version....2 games air on tuesday at 8:00pm @ 9:30pm & the same goes for wednesday.

also a 1 hour replay show on mondays at 6:00pm but its new so not sure of the details.

inside joke for jyafink: question sounds familiar. :D

If you can wait till late Sun or Mon and have the Superfan package I would check out the Short Cuts. They replay the entire game in 30 minutes without commercials.

Take a look at the Short Cuts tab here.

Token
Schedule the start of recording maybe 2 minutes early (to cover any game-related discussions before the game start)...and pad the end of the game by at least 30 minutes (games often run over).
Thanks. I was imagining a worst case scenario where the HR 21 tuner would change the channel to start recording and cause these pop-ups to appear, or they would occasionally pop up on their own, and if I wasn't around to clear them I would be stuck with them on the recording. I didn't think D* would be so stupid to do something like that but had to ask anyway. I'm just looking forward to the first time in many years where I don't have to go the torrent route to get my out of market games. Now, if only the stations would stop scrolling scores on the screen and spoiling the other games going on I would really be happy.
Also, and this is key:

make sure you punk a$$ little brother doesn't tell you who wins in the middle of the third quarter!

Yeah, a decade later, and I'm still bitter.
Besides the great info on recording times already posted - make sure that you check the local channels to verify that the game that you are trying to record is not also scheduled to be broadcast on a local channel. In that case, the ST channel will not show the game. This is all related to the current blackout rules, but to make sure that you are not disappointed - check to make sure that the game you are trying to record is not on the local - or if it is, record off the local channel.

If you are using an HR series DVR and you record a blacked out game in the 700s when the recording starts and the DVR realizes there's no signal it will search for the game on another channel. The only reason an out of market game should be blacked out is because it's on one of your local channels, so it will start recording it there. You don't have to do anything. Same thing will happen if you tune to it live.

If you want to set up an auto recording for all your team's games use the following keyword search. It will only record the game and not the short cuts or the pregame. Obviously substitute your favorite team's name.

STEELERS CCHAN 704 718 NNOT SHOW LIVE CUT

If you have HD and want only the HD version of the game add high-def/all from the list of subtypes after you choose continue from the keyword search screen.

LIVE may seem funny in there, but the 6 AM slot that is really not a show but on every channel has the word LIVE in the title, but the actual game doesn't have LIVE anywhere. Weird but adding LIVE elements the 6 AM to pregame slot that doesn't actually show anything.

Again this will get the NFLST games and the local channel games thanks to the blackout search. At least it should if it works correctly.

I've also added these for myself to get the national games on ESPN and NFL Network.

STEELERS CCHAN 206
STEELERS CCHAN 212

I chose show types/live from the subtypes to only get games and not other programming which espn may have and nfl network certainly has.

Hope this helps.

Player Tracker can be turned off and enhanced I am pretty sure you need to push the color buttons. Like a previous post if you can wait shortcuts is the way to go

How would one do this if you only wanted to record the shortcuts for Oh say the Cowboys.

I believe like this:

AALL Cowboys Cut CCHAN 704 718

Add high-def subtype to get the HD one only.

AALL means it has to have Cowboys and Cut so it won't get the games.

:) Got it set up. Thanks for the tips. :)

STEELERS CCHAN 704 718 NNOT SHOW LIVE CUT
Can you explain the syntax and what each part of the search does, if you know?

-The STEELERS part is self explanatory
-CCHAN 704 718: Does this mean to only look for your search within this channel range?

- What do NNOT, SHOW, LIVE, and CUT do?

Yes. Only channels between 704 and 718. Lots of add'l SEARCH syntax help here.

For games, you can also say: AALL steelers events NNOT live CCHAN 704 718

Not sure why the 6AM show is tagged "event", otherwise for just the games, you could say: steelers CCHAN 704 718 & Show Types, Events. (The & means hit "continue" and select categories on the next screen.)

If you have "Hide SD Duplicates" enabled in Setup, it should pick the HD games by default.

Yeah are there "instructions for dummies" on here somewhere?

Thanks
The searches will work but why bother? You can't just pick the shortcut out of the guide 16 times a year? Wow. Laaaaazy.

I think it's a bigger issue than that. Especially for NFLST, sometimes the game is local, sometimes it's not. Sometimes this changes in the middle of the week. Unless you check frequently, you can get screwed up. An example is last weeks Cowboys vs. Rams game. A week or two before the game it was only scheduled as an NFLST game, but sometime after that it switched to local and then was blacked out on NFLST.

Also, for playoffs, etc...I've had issues where I'm going on vacation around Christmas/New Years time but not sure when a game is going to be scheduled. Will it be the Saturday game, the Sunday Game, etc... If you know how to setup the logic, you can avoid a lot of these headaches, etc....and more reliably record the games you want. In the past I've just recorded ALL of the games just to be sure. But that's a waste of space..and I don't always have a lot of extra space to record all of the games to be sure.
