I'm thinking of going to Dish. I'm tired of slow performance of my receivers. I believe I am not under any two year contract. Can I tell by reviewing my account on-line? If I'm free to go is there a notice period or is it instantaneous?

One way to fix this is for them to replace my two DVRs with fast ones. Are there any of the receivers that are fast?

You have to call DirecTV to find out if you have anything left on your contract. As far as cancellation it can be instant or you can schedule a date.

I would disagree, not all Directv receives are slow (even HD). That's a pretty broad statement. And I honestly think some of the recent issues are temporary.

The HR24s are fast. I have two HR24-500s that are set with Native on. Both are connected to A/V receivers via HDMI cable. Channel changes between HD channels takes 2-3 seconds. Channel changes between SD and HD channels takes 3-5 seconds. Menu search/scrolling options are immediate after entering command.

DISH doesn't have any fast receivers, that's good to know. My HR34 and HR22 are performing better than ever.

Some of the recent issues are probably temporary, but the speed and remote response issues go back many years. Sometimes not too bad, sometimes horrible and sometimes just irritating as hell!

And the crux of the issue is that some are seeing it and some are not. I've got 3 HR24-500s and they are all slow, yet postings from some here that I know are not fanbois, indicate theirs are plenty fast.

Mine was an all new install, new dish, lnbs, cabling and DVRs. And all worked great with the SDGUI. Then the HDGUI hit the airwaves... :nono2::nono2:

My HR24 worked great after the HDGUI upgrade.. At times i have noticed it being slow but, recently it has been pretty good.. But, then again speed of my receiver is not on the top of my priority list.

For me, the speed is fine AFTER it actually responds to the remote. That is my main irritant. If I can see it doing something, even if it is a bit slow at the time it is not nearly as irritating as sitting there not responding to the remote.

Thirty years ago satellite TV was in it's infancy, TV's with cathode ray tubes were the norm, and home theater surround systems were found in the pages of Popular Science.

For me, the speed is fine AFTER it actually responds to the remote. That is my main irritant. If I can see it doing something, even if it is a bit slow at the time it is not nearly as irritating as sitting there not responding to the remote.

BTW, to all responding to this note; things were worse until about two weeks ago when I disabled RF and went back to IR on the remote. I found that using RF was really slowing things down. On one of my systems I bought this kit:

It's very cheap and works with the HR21 I have. My other system is by Channel Master and I just added an IR emitter to access the DVR. Since having done that I have eliminated the remote as the problem and isolated my issue to the delay in getting the Guide and the List to appear and then to the response time in any action from those two functions. Changing channels is slow and due to HDMI handshaking issues, something I'm not sure where the blame falls. However, I spend a lot of time with the Guide and List and that is what would make me change. I wish I had a friend/neighbor who had a Hopper so I could get a demo.
