Any strategy for content searches?

828 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bwaldron
I've had near zero success searching for HD sports content. I've tried keyword HDTV, basketball, football, audio/video type HDTV, show type event/live, and many combos with no matches.

Anyone have a good strategy for finding HD football/basketball games or HD sports events in general? I've been just using the guide manually and parts of my guide info seems to appear/disappear a lot.

For both this DVR and the old Tivos, I have always tried to search first on the team name, and second by the city. I have found that searching by the sport doesn't always work because the guides don't always have the sport in their discription.

Of course that makes it hard, for example, if you want to record ALL baseball games for the week, but I generally don't program like that.
You can't search on HD, can't on a Tivo either I believe, it's not a "category" to choose.

Basically in your searches just look for stuff on channels in the 70s or 90s or on your locals. Those are the HD channels.

So for example I have a saved search for Red Wings | Sports | Hockey.
I know if any games show up on 79 (HDNET) or on 95 I know it's in HD. Anything else it's not on an HD channel.

Hmmmm...you can save a search? I'll have to try that!! I used to set up Wishlists on my old Tivo. I guess this is the equivalant?

Thanks Scott, that's a good one. I can set them up for Nets (basketball) and New York Giants (football) easily enough. But I love HD sports so much (HD sports guide site is great), I like to record any other NFL, NBA, and College Basketball games in HD that look intriguing. And the sports/basketball list was hundreds long and can only scroll 5 at a time! Guess I'll just have to page thru the HD channels in the guide every few days and pick. Unfortunately, the guide is so flaky I have to keep going back and re-doing it (for chs. 95-96 for example.)

I don't think you can save them forever, I think it queues up the last 25 or 50 when you look at the list ("recent searches"). I guess I might incorrectly call them a saved search. So what I do is clear out the search list from time to time and only leave the ones I use all the time. So that kind of "saves" them. When you do this you can use the cool as beans mark and delete method so you can mark several searches to delete all at once (just like you can in the My Playlist).

And yes, the HR20 "search" is like the Tivo wishlist but just not as powerfull. Yet anyway.

I hear you on 95 and 96. You can't trust the guide data until perhaps an hour before the event. Unfortunately.

I'll give you another tip though since you like HD sports of just about any kind.

Bring up the guide.
Arrow to the left to highlight the channel number of say HDNet or ESPNHD.
Hit Info button.
This might take 20-30 seconds.
Once it loads it has the entire 2 weeks worth of shows for that channel up on the screen you can scroll through.
Now you can scroll through and one touch record all the HD sports you are interested in (HDNet for example has hockey, soccer and college basketball).
So you could do this every week and a half or so on HDNet, TNTHD, ESPNHD and ESPN2HD and catch all the HD sports available on those channels.
Thanks much Scott, I will do that. I think I tried that once with ESPN and found there are so many programs (like 30 & 60 minute ones) that my thumb gets tired pretty quick from all that scrolling. I'll try again with a little patience. Just not used to doing this kind of thing manually...

And I had finally found a wishlist for the HR10-250 that worked pretty darn well... Keyword HDTV, category sports....
Here is another guide trick for tired thumbs.
Most of these games are probably in prime time (not counting weekends).
Bring up the normal guide and arrow to the right until you get to say 7 or8 pm.
Now you can use the green button to move ahead 12 hours in the guide. So press it 2 times to pop to the next day prime time. One touch record any games (plus this way you can check say ESPN, ESPN2 and TNT HD channels all at once). Then keep advancing day by day. This may be a lot faster then info.
This is the method I used when first setting up my series links. I could quickly get all 4 networks on one screen and fly thru the guide to prime time each day.

I do wish you could see more channels and a longer time frame in the guide but it will do for now. Perhaps someone else will have a better search criteria for you.
This brings up my peeve of not having the "@" symbol on the on-screen keypad.

On my TiVo, I set up a keyword recording using "@" and "Ravens" to get just the football games of the Ravens and not the other 25 shows during the week that occurred.

My best solution at this point is...I try to remember sometime during the week (that reminds me, I gotta do it for this Sundays game) to go in and set the one-time recording myself. I do the same thing for Terps basketball.

Like someone else mentioned though, your most recent searches are available, so I often go to that list, find my Terps search and let it bring up the next two weeks of Terps on TV, sort through the list to find the actual games and set those to record individually.

This works, but just remember to check the ToDo list every day, as these recordings are randomly canceled overnight.

The closest you can get is to do a Category Search for HD Content. There is more info under Category Search in the Tips & Tricks 2.9a. Or do a Category Sort on Football. But you can't do both at once. Sorry.

Some of your problems are covered in these Wish List Requests.
#4 "Display only the channels that are in your current subscription package" p. 33
#6 More functional search (ignore "The" and "A" at start of title, better search logic - AND, OR, NOT, include colon character)
#11 Apply Current/Favorite Channels as a filter to Search for "just what you want to watch" p. 31
#34 Option to put search results in folders by program title

In the mean time you can save your thumbs a little. You can move through your Search Results listings 90 minutes ahead or back by pressing the red and green buttons.

Someday I am sure that we willl be able to do a basic search...

Not sure what you're talking about unless you mean on 95 where the guide data is wonky sometimes. I've never had a single game canceled in the 4 months I've had the HR20.

On the HR10, you can use HDTV as a category for wishlists -- I do it. On the Tivo Series 3, you cannot.

On my HR20, I've had a few games on the sports packages canceled, as islesfan describes. No rhyme or reason to why that I could see (and it hasn't happened to me yet w/ 10b).
