DirecTV has sent me some emails recently to come back after being away from them for a few years now. These offers are pretty compelling, for example the new one where now where I can get Sunday Ticket for free for the 2012-2013 season. However, one big thing keeping me from jumping back in with DirecTV is the lack of a standalone Red Zone channel. I'll take the free Sunday Ticket which includes the Red Zone channel gladly, however I would not be re-upping Sunday Ticket next year. My favorite NFL team is local, so I don't need it to follow my team like a lot of people do. Right now with Cox I pay $40 a year for Red Zone channel. I watch it mainly when the Patriots game is at a commercial or at half time, and watch it during the times when the Pats aren't playing.

Has there been any news or rumors concerning DirecTV possibly offering the Red Zone channel as a standalone channel to purchase? I'd even pay up to $100 a year for it.

The last few years theyve been giving it free to alot of custys that are in good standing.
Seeing that I would be a new (returning) customer, do you think I'd have less of a chance getting it for free in future years? Might I stand a chance "negotiating" that with them before signing up?

The D* NFL Red Zone is not the same as any other provider's "Red Zone"..it is not currently offered free and only available in the NFL Sunday Ticket Max package.

Ironically, your offer of $100/yr matches the new customer offer. At Choice Xtra and above, the NFL Sunday Ticket is added free ($199.95 for existing customers), but the NFL Sunday Ticket Max is $100 ($299.95 for existing customers)..it includes the NFL Red Zone and other features.

Hope this helps!

I understand the channels are different. I've watched both and actually prefer the NFL Network produced version with Scott Hanson over the DirecTV channel. Both are good, but Hanson is my favorite.

Now if only I could get the Max part, and not the rest of Sunday Ticket.

Depending on certain criteria, which is not public, you can get the stand alone DirecTv Red Zone channel free from retention department.

I have had it for the past two years, but I have no idea what the criteria is for getting it approved.

I know you didn't ask, but after moving into a non-cabled area I switched back to Direct from comcast recently. I had the Redzone channel last season and I gave it mixed results. It's wasn't worth the extra I paid for. Yea you got highlights but not the real chance to see a game develop. It was like eating a marshmellow to me. Lots of sugar but little substance. Still pondering adding ST this fall.
