I lived that Vegas dream for 5 years. It was very frustrating. Here in Tucson, the Padres are blacked out on MLB.TV but not Extra Innings. It will be great for baseball fans across the country to not be subject to the blackouts and it will help operators such as DirecTV from having to explain to their customers why a particular team is not available. If they really get this done, I would say that the era of DuPuy and Selig was very productive.

Can we get the local game blacked out on MLB.tv gone, too? That one makes no sense. You cannot watch the Orioles broadcast in Orioles territory on your computer.

They black the games out in Orioles territory because they are available on MASN. In Buffalo we are in the home territory of four teams; the Yankees, Mets, Pirates, and Indians and they are all blacked out of extra innings and mlb.tv. Fortunately for us, unlike Las Vegas the games are available to us on the RSN's.

I can't believe it :eek2: Someone in MLB actually sounds like 1) they have some sense and 2) really want to help (not hurt) baseball :hurah:
I had always thought the purpose of Black Outs was not to hurt game attendence. Which would be if you lived close enough to get to the game in person you should be blacked out. But strangely it doesn't work that way at all! My RSNs are Cincy, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. It is a drive, but I can get to those areas to watch games. In fact, I have gone to games in all three areas. On the other hand, it is much too far to get to N.Y. for the Yankees yet I have to have MLB EI to be able to watch them  Not that they are much to watch this year anyway

I meant the local broadcast, which would be MASN. You cannot watch MASN in the MASN territory on your computer. That makes no sense.

It does make sense (from MASN's point of view). MASN bought exclusive in-market rights for that area. RSN's are some of the most expensive stations to carry. Just because a person has the online MLB package, doesn't mean they subscribe to MASN on cable/satellite. MASN would see this as lost revenue. However, you're right. It really doesn't make any sense from a subscriber's point of view.

You think MASN gets nothing from MLB? You think MLB is showing all those games for no revenue to the broadcaster? I seriously doubt it.

Tonyd,

They do, but remember the name of the game for MASN is ratings and the ad revenue it generates. The web revenue is secondary. TV people understand ratings, sell ratings, live ratings...it takes a while to break that type of addiction.

I hope so. I am just pointing out the fallacy in the system. I don't really care why it happens other than to pinpoint the stupidity.

What can happen is that I can watch something OTHER than MASN on my computer. How is that a good thing for MASN? And I am not going to be watching MASN in my home territory on my computer when it is on my TV unless I have zero cable or satellite. So, all that would happen is MORE watching of MASN not less. I'd be watching it when I am not at home but still in my home territory.

The logic is flawed (or maybe more likely simplistic). In cases like these, I always remember how the Dodgers refused to have any home games on TV in the 60s because they thought it hurt the gate, not realizing that games on TV were advertising that they got paid for.
