Archiving/ backing up 722

I have been quite impressed with this recently obtained 722 with 55 hours of HD recording. The TiVO finally pales in comparison. But does the 722 allow programs to be dragged and dropped onto a pc (like my TiVO does?).

I understand you can have an external hard drive attached to the 722, but the only way to play it is via the DVR interface. Is it possible to remove the proprietary headers of Dish and play it on a pc for example?

Any such functionality would involve hacking and that is not discussed on this forum.
I see...
I guess I will be satisfied if I can plug in an external hard drive, and just use it as a backup for my programs - probably the way to go. You don't lose much, you can still archive your favorite programs - you are restricted to watching it via the 722 device, but not a big deal.

But then there is only so much you can archive - not like we have that much time on our hands...

You can archive, just not in HD. Simply hook up the s-video output from the 722 to a video capture card in your pc and make the audio connections. Play the saved program and it will be captured on the pc. Slow real time processing but an analog capture of HD is really quite good. Use a program like video redo to edit out the commercials and then burn to dvd or save on your hard drive.
Or you can use a PocketDish if the program is not recorded in HD. SD recordings can be transfered to a PD using the USB port so it is much faster than live recording. It takes about 15 minutes to transfer a movie. Once you have the file on the PD you can attach it to a computer and archive the program on the computer. You have to copy it back to the PD to watch it however. You can't do anything with the file on the computer since it is encrypted. For playback you can connect the PD to a TV so you don't actually have to watch it on the tiny screen.

Just another option.

Just so everyone is clear here. You can move a program to the external hard drive to archive it, but you can't copy a program to the external hard drive as a backup to what's on the internal hard drive.
