So I'm trying to copy a movie onto my Archos but its telling me that I can't due to copy protection issues, and that I should go search on Dish Network's website.

When I do that, I find information suggesting that I can move a program from the DVR to the 605, but not copy it. Fine, I'd like to do that, except there doesn't appear to be a way to make that happen.

Am I completely screwed with HBO now? Is there a way to Move versus Copy? It would be nice if there was a place that Dish could just tell us exactly what is up. Or maybe they do and I just can't find it.

Thanks.

HBO controls the "access rights" to the shows they broadcast. They decided to prevent their content from being copied to external devices. Dish has no control over this; they are contractually required to comply in order to offer HBO programming.

I fully understand the rules.

The problem is that Dish tells me to go to this page:

http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/faq/copy_protection/

to learn more, where it repeatedly talks about having "one copy" of an item. This paragraph seems to indicate that I should be able to make the copy be on my Archos, but I can't.

When a program has HDCP you will still able to make one copy (analog or digital) of a program that airs but, you will not be able to then further duplicate that copy. For example, if you have a DISH Network DVR you can record a show but you would not be able to then record that same show to a DVD recorder. You could however "move" this copy to a PocketDISH, meaning the show would move from the DVR hard drive to the hard drive in the PocketDISH, once moved the show would no longer be available on the DVR.

While I don't have a solution for your problem, keep in mind that when it gets "moved" to the Archos device that it is downrezed to fit the small screen and that the downrezed version is what is stored on the Archos drive. If you then want to move it back to the DVR the only thing you will have available to move back is the downrezed version.

jbrooks- Yep, I've put a bunch of other content on my Archos just fine

Richard- That's what I'm expecting... no interest in moving it back to the DVR, just want to record it and take it with me on one of my many road trips!
