Philadelphia, a city known for its passionate sports fans, now has another professional football team to cheer - and boo, too.
The Arena Football League (AFL), which was founded 16 years ago and has steadily increased in popularity, is coming to Philadelphia next year.
Ron Jaworski, an NFL analyst for ESPN and former Eagles quarterback, said that he and a group of partners had reached an agreement in principle yesterday to join the AFL. He said that the deal will be sealed once the paperwork is completed.
"We're ninety-nine and nine-tenths done," said Jaworski, who will be the new team's co-owner and director of football operations.
"It's only legalese [left to take care of] right now."
The group paid an undisclosed amount three years ago to the AFL as a fee for rights to the Philadelphia market. The team, as yet unnamed, will begin play in 2003 with the First Union Center as its home.
