Atlanta locals HD quality on D*???

I'm looking to upgrade to HD and I live in an area north of town that has the OTA TV signals shadowed by a mountain. We have always had marginal OTA TV reception even though we are only 20 miles from downtown. Since the digital broadcasts are still on the interim lower power channel assignments for another couple of years, I doubt I will be able to get reliable OTA digital signals at this time.

My question is how good/bad are the Directv HD locals for Atlanta compared to the true OTA signals? Are they highly compressed (i.e. HD Lite)?

I'm not sure how qualified I am to answer your question, but I live about 35 miles east of Atlanta, (Covington area) and unfortunately, I can't get OTA due to trees and distance. I find the D* HD locals very clear on my AKAI 42". I'm sure like everyone says, they are compressed, but I find them very acceptable.

Hope this helps.

I am south of the city, and find the HD locals thru the satellite very good.
I am north of Atlanta (Sugar Hill) also. For OTA I use a Winegard Square Shooter with an amp through a HR10-250 and get a good picture on all channels except 2 which is off again, on again depending on the atmospheric conditions. On my second set I have an H20-100 and get CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, and CW and do not see any difference between them and the OTA on my primary set. When the dust settles on the HR20 I plan to replace my HR10-250 with it and have OTA and D* locals on my primary set.
thanks for the replies.

Am I correct the Atlanta HD locals are on a Ka bird at 99 or 103?

Is there a transponder map for the rest of the national HD channels on Ku? (i.e. which are on 101 or 110 or 119?)

The Atlanta HD locals are coming from the 103 orbital slot.

Not mapped by transponder, but you can find out which channels are on which satellite at http://www.lyngsat.com/america.html. After clicking on a satellite, you need to click on one of the red "P" boxes to see the listing.
