I am having issues with my HR20-700 recently with audio dropping almost completely, until I turn up my audio receiver and the audio pops back in, and then I can turn it back down again to a reasonable level. This seems to happen when audio switches from Dolby to Stereo, but doesn't always. It is connected to my receiver by a digital optical connection.

I am also having intermittent audio/video sync problems where the audio won't match up with lips on the screen.

Any suggestions? If I have it replaced under the DirecTV protection plan, will I get back a HR20-700 or will they give me a HR21?

Some home theater receivers have a problem when moving in and out of DD 5.1. When you have a commercial that is non-DD, and then come back to DD in the standard program, some receivers get completely lost, or take a few seconds to re-sync up to the DD data stream.

I have seen others report this problem. For some, updating firmware on their HT system solved the problem, others however, ended up replacing their HT system with a more compatible one. I have used 3 Onkyos of various lineage and they all worked fine. My current 605 works very well...but there still can be a second or two when switching in and out of a DD stream. Interestingly, there is often a one second or so delay from a commercial back to live program video (in the program source), in which case I don't get any audio loss ...because there is enough "blank time" in the program source to allow the audio to re-sync.

As Litzdog asked, what make and model HT receiver are you using?

I'm having the same audio problem without the audio/video sync problems. My audio will be very low. And I will crank up the volume and then the next thing I know the sound jumps up and I just about get blasted out of the house. I then turn down the volume. I used to keep the audio at one setting, but not anymore :(

It is a Kenwood VR-7070. I understand the volume changes between Dolby and Stereo as my local NBC station does it all the time to put weather updates on it, but this is different. I have to do like the poster stated above to get audio back.

I had a Kenwood VR 6070 until December, when it broke. It did have a form of the problem hasan mentioned: after automatically entering DD 5.1 mode and then, when a DD 2.0 signal was encountered, leaving DD 5.1 mode and entering DD 2.0 mode, it would not automatically restore the processing mode you had previously set for DD 2.0 (typically that would be PL II movie or music). It's rather abstruse and hard to explain, but it was really annoying. This does not really sound like your problem, but you might check the various detailed settings for Dolby ProLogic music -- if the receiver is slipping in and out of this mode, it might be related.

When my Kenwood broke I replaced it with a Pioneer and am happier now. I think the Kenwood engineers never quite got it together.

I have almost the EXACT same problem. Onkyo TX SR505. It only happens on some channels and when it does it is usually during commercials. For me it's almost like all the channels except for the sub get completely attenuated. If i turn it up a little they all pop back in and then I can turn it down again. Usually this happens during a local channel HD broadcast but almost never during the program. It's never happened while playing music or movies.

I just added 2 more speakers for 7.1 we'll see if it clears up at all...doubtful though. At least it doesn't happen during the programming.
