I've had my HR-21 for a little more than a week now. For a day or so I was able to make category only keyword searches using a space as the keyword, but this hasn't worked since I received 0x255. I can no longer 'continue' until I've entered a non-space character in the keyword field. Searches using only CCHAN, etc, do not work. I've tried everything I can think of as a workaround with no success. I've been pouring over this forum and the directv official forums looking for any discussion of this but have seen nothing. With my TiVos I was able to set up wishlists for say science fiction and comedy movies but I have been unable to reproduce with this the HR-21 autorecord searches. Any ideas? (Please don't suggest using HDTV etc as keywords. Not really an acceptable restriction).

Use the category as the keyword for the autorecord.

for example if you wanted car racing put "racing" as the keyword, then sports>auto.

For some reason, when the DVR receives new software the keyword searches based on "space" become invalid. The only recourse is to recreate them - delete the original, reinput it, and it will work again.

I've not experimented to see if it's really just a restart/reboot that causes the "space" searches to become invalid, but for sure new software does it...

We have to consider "space" searches an "unsupported" feature, because it's a use that wasn't intended, but does come in handy.

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying. It appears that 'space' searches can't be entered at all now; 'continue' doesn't highlight. I have done a hard reboot at least once since receiving the new software but the search behavior hasn't changed.

That's news - up until this release, it would accept "SPACE" as a search term all by itself. Looks like the loophole has closed - as I mentioned, it was an "Unsupported Feature" ...

Hrm. Well that sucks. Being able to search for all programs in a given category doesn't seem like too much to ask for. It's not like I want arbitrary wildcards in my keywords.

That does suck. I used to use the space "feature" myself to do category-only searches. It was very handy.

I fashioned a crude workaround to approximate category-only searches. I now use:

AANY A E I O U Y W & (category of choice)

It's more verbose to enter than just using space, but it gets results, at least.

I don't know if it's easier to just enter the category as a keyword as LI-SVT suggests or not. Depends on what the category is, I suppose.
