Awesome Install in NJ!

After months of reading this forum and being very worried by all the bad install stories - yesterday it was finally my turn. I had a tech from DirecTech in Monmouth County, NJ. The appt. was from 8-12 and he showed up at 11am.

The guy was very friendly - I walked him through exactly what I wanted. 1 HD DVR, 1 HD and 4 standard going to 4 different rooms. He mounted the dish on the back part of my roof pointing over the peak so it's completely invisible from the street which I was thrilled with. All the wires were ran down inside gutters so you can't see them on the side of the house.

We drilled two holes into the house - one into an upstairs bedroom for a standard recevier and a 1" hole into the basement to feed in the 4 lines to the multiswitch which he hid in my basement drop ceiling.

The only problem I had was an old 13" TV I had would get wavy lines on it when we hooked up the box. We spent about an hour troubleshooting that - checking the connections, receivers and multi-switch output until we finally determined it had to be the TV. Every other TV worked fine.

The total install took 6 hours. I was very happy and I gave the guy $40 - he didn't charge me for anything extra at all.

Only question I have - on some of my TVs he entered the zip code at 07757 instead of 07751. I called the guy back and he said it didn't make any difference in terms of the signals, etc .... Is this true?

Glad you like the tech's work and showed your appreciation.

Don't worry about the zip code; it is just used for dish pointing instructions during the setup.
:)

Tell you one thing though. I wouldn't spend an hour on an old TV to figure out it is bad/on its way out.

Sounds like a really good install. Glad to heat it went well
I'm glad you had a great experience. I had a different experience with Directec. The guy showed up late and told me that I had some trees blocking only the odd transponders from 103. I suggested the multiswitch but he wouldn't listen. Also, he chenged the LNB and left the old one in the yard. By the way, I bypassed the multiswitch and I got my channels back. I have directec coming out sunday with a new multiswitch. I hope I get the op's guy. :)
Jonrud -- Do you have the installer's name? If I upgrade to HD, I want to make sure I get him instead of the guys who did my R15 install 2 years ago.
His name was Jose. You could try to request him when you schedule.

If its a D12, the wavy lines have been a problem. Hook them up with AV cables and your problem should be solved

Zipcode is used for locals. As long as that zipcode is covered under the same locals, you're ok.

If you are that pleased with the technician and his work a note or email to his
office would go a long way to keep his morale up, after all he made your day
why not make his

call Directv and let them know what a wonderful job the installer did. he should get points for it.
:welcome_s My installer did the same thing with the zipcode he put in 11111 instead of 79912...but it seems ok my locals are fine
The zip code in the receiver is only used for the info for the initial setting on the dish. The locals are determined by the zip code on your account in D*'s system not the zip entered into the receiver.

Bill,

Ya gotta watch it. I got a story about an Ironwood tech who got a back charge because the customer called DTV to praise the great work and get the tech's address to send a tip. The reason was " a call to DTV during the first year is cause for a $100.00 charge back." The manager didn't read anything about the reason for the call and just hit the check; they fixed it also, i heard.

I didn't advise the op to call Directv, I advised them if they were happy with
the techs work to contact his office, they in turn can forward any compliments to
the tech at a meeting, and if they are inclined they can forward the compliments
to Directv, and they in turn may even recognize the technician. Yor info is also
good, I would never go to Directv without going through the local office.

I had one particular D12 install give me a scrolling white bar up the screen and a buzz in 1 room. Switched boxes out twice, same problems, finally switched out boxes with the D12 in the living room and it fixed the issue. No rhyme or reason why.

You can enter whatever number you want for the zip code. Where did you hear this about the locals? Here I have seen techs use 12121, where the zips here start with 3's. The spot beam is for locals, from what I understand.

Then again, i could be wrong.
