Back to Dish ---what to expect

1571 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  MedMech
I have been out of DBS for a couple years and got back into it due to a cannot refuse deal though my internet-phone company.

As a new subscriber what kind of receivers/DVR should I be getting and are there any install tips that I should be aware of? I still have the Directv dish with 4 lnb outputs will that be sufficient for the newer Dish equipment? I would like the move the dish to the ground for easy snow removal, will the installer do a ground mount or should I put a post in?

Sorry about the newbism but I've been out of the loop for awhile.

If you had Directv before, you will be getting all new equipment. The Dishes are not the same...

Thanks, I know that but I'm wondering what receivers dish gives for basic installation.
If you want your dish on the ground, I recommend putting in your own pole.

Start by using http://www.dishpointer.com to figure out where you can put it to get clear line-of-site to the satellites you need (without knowing your city or zip, and what equipment you want, I can't tell you what these are).

Then, get yourself a chain link fence post (galvanized steel, 1 5/8" OD, about $8 at Home Depot), put a bolt through the bottom to prevent the post from turning (or pound the end flat), and use 150+ pounds of concrete to set it. Widen the hole at the bottom to prevent heaving. Make sure the post is plumb. You might also want to put in some 1" ID conduit to the dish, with sweeps on each end.

I can promise you that you will do a much better job than most sat installers do. I've seen more than one pole just pounded into the ground; no concrete. And trenching isn't included, etc.
Well i got what I expected, a guy pulled up in a beat up truck, didn't have a toner, there is a potential lnb problem and he didn't have a spare lnb, not to mention that he was mounting the much larger diameter on the existing Dtv pole which made the dish sloppy and moved easily.

So here I sit with no tv.

I get to take more time off for the pos installer.
The DISH Network dish should fit just fine on an old 1-5/8" DIRECTV mast.

You need to be more specific about what kind of receivers you're asking for. There are:

1. SD receiver for one TV (311)
2. SD receiver for two TVs (322)
3. SD DVR for one TV (510; not really sure these are still available)
4. SD DVR for two TVs (625; these may not be available anymore)
5. HD receiver for one HDTV (ViP211)
6. HD receiver for one HDTV + one SDTV (ViP222)
7. HD DVR for one HDTV (ViP612)
8. HD DVR for one HDTV + one SDTV (ViP722)

I got the 322 and 522 dvr.

Likely the problem was that he didn't have a DPP Twin for your Dish500. That's poor planning on the installer's or dispatcher's part.
Well, the guy left he said he had no idea what to do. After being on hold with tech support for 15 minutes I did a check switch and everything is working. The guy said I'm done you'll have to call Dish for to finish it. He left cables hanging, track, tools..god thats just the beginning. I told him I was willing to pay him to complete the job but he kept walking. I understand that I have a very big house and its a PIA but he was a knucklehead.

There's more but in a nutshell I called Dish directly and they are sending out a Dish tech and field manager to check it out.

My half full side is impressed with the new dish equipment and SD picture if that counts for anything. Plus since I'm with an affiliate (TDS) I get to talk to real Americans when I call for support.
If and when QC audits the job, they'll likely fail the job and not pay the installer's employer until the job is completed to Dish' specs.

Dish is coming out next week, I'm sure with the lack of grounding alone they will not pay to fools.
Dish came out yesterday and the tech was nothing short of phenomenal, from proper safety on the job to cleanliness, to an absolute perfect install, grounding.

He won my heart when he pulled his Suunto line of sight compass, not a cheap piece of equipment by any stretch.
