I left DirecTV in February 2011 with 17 months still remaining on my contract, so I paid the $340 ETF and canceled.

Well, circumstances changed, and I came crawling back to D* this week. When I called to get set up, without even my asking, the CSR told me they can credit my account for that full $340.

I'm using it to pay for NFLST for the 2012 season. Sweet!

Has anyone ever heard of this happening, them refunding Early Termination Fees for returning customers? What's their motive for doing it? Not that I'm complaining...

It's not uncommon for an ECF to be credited back however it's usually only the months that would remain in the original agreement. You had 17 months left, so usually 5 months would have been credited had you been gone for 12 months. There could be a special going on or if it was an outbound call to you it may have been something they're authorized to do.
