Backing up DVR programs to a large hard drive

I would like to archive programs or movies on my DVR via the usb port to a rather large inexpensive hard drive if this is possible without buying the pocketdish.

Like lujan said.... Do a search on USB Drive and you should find a lot of threads on it.
