Basic file editing tools needed.

Now that USB storage is about (hopefully) to be released it would be nice to have some basic file editing tools. A few simple ones would go a long way. Here is my list and please add any more that I missed.

  • Start Cut (all info before deleted and add 2 second fade up of video/audio)
  • End Cut (all info after deleted and add 2 second fade down of video/audio)
  • Divide (split at that point and add a 2 second video/audio fade up/down)
  • Combine (join selected after current with a 2 second video/audio fade up/down)
  • Chapter Stops (up to 99 per file)

This would be wonderful.... :)

But I don;t think it will happen.

They will be VERY cautious about the files, as they will want to avoid all possibility of you copying a show and putting it on Bittorrent. :(

I would bet that the formatted drive won't even be openable or searchable on a PC. That would leave you with editing things like this on the DVR itself.

Possible, but not likely, but would be nice. Dish surprise us? :)
This is a dream that isn't going to come true. The people who produce the programming will not allow it.
I'm not meaning for the editing to be done on a HTPC but by software in the 622. These are very simple editing tools that could be used to clean up recordings. Just have a menu called File Edit and the five choices listed. When you pick one like Start Cut play would pause and it would bring up a Yes or No box and Say something like "You are about to delete all info before the paused point and program will start from this new point".
Even that would be objected to from the content provider's perspective. Not that Dish should not do it just because of that, but they definitely would object.

Why would you be doing this editing? Most likely to cut off adverts, interstitials, etc. They want you to have them in there. They don't want you keeping the recordings either, if they had their way they would delete after you watched them once.

I agree it would be nice, I just don't see it happening.
It would a "nice to have" feature but I don't think that it is going to happen either.

I also think that the USB drive will be a nice feature too (depending on how that they allow it to be used, i.e., multiple receivers, multiple drive support). What I do now is transfer "keepers" to my DVD recorder, edit them and then burn them to DVD. The exception to this is HD movies which stay on the DVR since there are no stand alone HD DVD recorders (yet).

I don't think any this will be coming. Just trimming the start and end time would help, but I don't think they will do it.
I doubt we will see it happen either.

I could make use of the feature during the times when I have to set my timer to start early and end late to make sure I catch the whole show... it would be nice to go back and trim off the start/end to just what I needed for the episode I intended to record... but I suspect that there are so many potential "undesired" uses that we would never see this implemented.
No, they won't put the functionality in because of copyright issues, and once again it comes down to the providers not staying in step with technology! There is no good reason you shouldn't, at the very least, be able to cut off the end of a recording you extended just in case the show (game) ran long. You could do it on Beta and VHS via re-recording, and BETA was especially good for editing (VHS eventually caught up) - the idea that we can't delete the end or beginning of a recorded show is total BS. :nono:
