I recently purchased a Rosewill RX-358-V2 BLK, sata to esata/usb enclosure which according to multiple reviews on newegg worked with HR** HDDVRS, tried with both my HR21 and Hr24 with two different HDs, a seagate barracuda 750 and a WD Caviar 1tb, neither would recognize (spit out error code), DTV faulted the HR21 and are sending a replacement and rosewill said no, we don't support, but as you're a good customer, we'll issue a full rma and pay shipping, so looking for an enclosure from the "guru's" that I can be positive will work!:) (kudo's to DTV and Rosewill for the great service, "once you talk to the right person..")

The two best enclosures still to date are the Antec(Varis) MX-1 for a cooled enclosure, and the Thermaltake BlacX docking station. The most prevalent drives are the WD AVGP models(EVDS, EURS), some are still using EADS and some are now using EARX drives...no reason to buy anything faster than 3Gb/sec drives as the current HR's only do 1.5Gb/sec, although there are reports that the HR34 now has a sata channel that supports 3Gb/sec. Also there is no need to buy 7200rpm drives as they dont give any appreciable performance increase and generate more heat.

..Thank you sir. will add, is there any difference between a HR-21 100 and an HR-21 700, as this is the "new" receiver Direct sent...?
The 21-700 is probably the best of the 21 series of HRs. That includes the 22s and the 23. The 21-100 is not the best of the 21 series.

the Thermaltake BlacX docking station, instantly recognized, still will give kudos to rosewill and newegg, full refund with free return shipping! and I agree, huge difference between the hr100 and 700, but neither comes close to my HR24, but thanks to DirectTV, didn't pay anything for the 100 and replacement 700....now just will wait and see if the hd gets too hot and burns out...(and wait for prices to come down on larger!)....thank you! Huge help! Well done!

You actually got a 20-700 replacement and it worked? Good for you.

The 20-700s run warmer than any of the other HRs (don't know what a 20-100 runs at, never had one that worked) at about 126 degrees. Put an EADS or an EARS (WDs) HDD on it and it should run at about 118 degrees. I know that both HDDs are not made for DVRs and running 24/7, but that drop in temperature has to help.

The EVDS and EURS drives also seem to drop the temp in a very similar fashion.

I have 5 hr20-700/1 hr20-100 & 1 hr22-100. I own about 15 of that exact rosewill esata enclosure. They all worked perfectly. In fact I prefer them over the antec in many ways. I mostly buy hitachi and samsung drives. Just because they are cheaper than the best wd drives. I don't like seagate.
