With an HR-24-200 and whole home I have a few questions before I buy a device to stream Netflix:

Any opinions on which to buy? Roku? We don't have any blu ray discs or dvd's.

If I stream Netflix to my TV, can I watch it in other rooms like Direct TV/

Thanks very much.

I used to use Play On with the upgrade (one time fee) to watch netflix on my HR's through media share. (i think it needed the upgrade fee) I can't say how well it works anymore since i got a blu ray player I use it. If i need to watch something in the morning I'll try the Play On thru HR-21 and report back.

Several ways of doing it, don't know how much "better' each way is, mostly just different.

I prefer using a PS3 in my setup. Not only allows Netflix streaming at 1080P (upconverted) but also DD5.1 Surround Sound. The main reason I like the PS3 is that besides the Netflix thing, I can play games, watch DVDs, Blu-Rays, I can also stream content from my PC (over my network) through the PS3. Music, pictures, video. The PS3 also allows you to use Hulu+, among other services if you wish.

The PS3 can be hooked up via ethernet on your network, or it has it's own built in wifi capability.

I have the Western Digital TV Live Plus and a Samsung TV.
Both work well for Netflix, but I prefer the WD.
I bought a refurb WD TV Live Plus and haven't been too happy with it. The network connection drops out quite often. Hopefully this is not typical, but it is disappointing.

My Samsung BD player works fine for Netflix and is much better for streaming video files from my computer than Media Share on my DVRs.

Edit:
I recently got a Sony BDP-BX18 Blu-ray player ($69.96 at Costco) and Netflix streams fine on that one as well although I prefer the navigation on the Sammy C5500.

Watching a streaming episode from Netflix through Play On to my HR20-700. Play on is running on the same laptop I'm typing on, but it is on a hard line to my network. I'm still using unsupported ethernet for whole home and media share. Video seems just as good as through the BD player although its takes a few more button presses to get there and the laptop has to be on.

I paid for Play On Basic years ago, and it's no longer available. Their best deal that includes netflix access is 79 bucks, but that includes a "free" roku.

Like others have said, there are multiple methods. If you're not going to get a BD player, or PS3, you already have an HR to stream to with Play On, a roku or WD would be needed for tv's without an HR.

I've tried many platforms to stream NF on and the best ones I've found are the Samsung BD players. But, I wouldn't buy one again until the new models come out in April. I've tried this year's models and had no luck at all with them. I have three C5500s from the previous year and they are very reliable. I recently tried two of this year's 6500s and neither could even access NF. I called NF and they told me getting a 6500 that streams was a matter of luck. Called Samsung and got told the same thing. Ended up trying a BD D5500 figuring how much different could it be from a C5500. Wrong approach, did get it to stream NF, but it kept rebuffering (just as the NF guy I talked to previously said it would).

But the C5500s work very well and, hopefully, Samsung will have everything fixed when their new models come out next month.

I did do a lot of troubleshooting with the 6500s and could find nothing wrong with my Ethernet system. The C5500s were hooked up to the same lines as the 6500s and they had no problem connecting to the Net. Nor did they rebuffer every five minutes as the D5500 did. Worse than watching commercials.

But when the Sammy BD players work correctly, you get more bang for the buck than you do with any other streaming device, I think.

I've had and sold Rokus, Panasonic BD players, Apple TV and even tried an LG box (don't go there).

The PS3s do work very well and we do have one, but using a game controller for a remote just seems too weird.

The new Apple boxes might be the answer, but if they don't upscale NF's 720p content, I wouldn't buy another one. NF doesn't have much 1080p content and the Sammys upscale to 1080/60p, not perfect, but much better than any other device I've tried.

Is a PS3 the only way to get DD5.1?

Last year's Apple TV was rumored to be able to carry 5.1, but the one I had didn't. Doesn't really matter, NF doesn't have that many movies in 5.1. Or TV shows. 30 Rock is in 720p "HD" and 5.1, but I couldn't get the 5.1 on the Apple TV box. Got it on the PS3, tho.

NF says it's up to the maker of the device to allow it to play in 5.1 and Samsung says it's up to NF. Panasonic tech support (joke) didn't have a clue. Don't know if the new Rokus do, but I've taken my ride on a Roku (actually had three of them) and I'm not doing that again.
