black screen issues

1238 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  LI-SVT
I have had the HR20 since October and I have weathered many of the early "bugs" that came with the unit. Since the last update, mine has worked flawlessly until the last week. Three times in the last 5 days, when I turn my tv and the HR20 on, the screen is completely black. I do have complete remote functionality. I an change channels (although every channel has the black acreen), access the guide and the menu. I even tested my signal stength of the satellite. Everything checked out ok, but again, the screen was black. This seems different than the black screen of death bug I was reading about in this forum, because my remote did not lock up.
I did a red button reset each time and it solved the problem, but it's annoying. Does anyone have any advice for this problem, and is it worth my while to call Direct Tv (I do have the protection plan, so I uess I could push for a replacement)? Thanks in advance for any help.

It is the BSB. There are a quite a few posts about it and there is a poll. Make sure you take that.

Here's the link for the poll. There's also a poll to see what your connection is.
I'm not familiar wit the black screen bug. Is it similar to what Idescribed in my first post. If so, is Direct Tv planning to do anything about it? Thanks again

Ah, the voice of the blissfully unknowing. The Black Screen Bug, along with other known issues, are described in detail here:

Unfortunately, there seem to have been a sharp rise in incidents of this bug in the last several weeks. I'm honestly glad to hear that it hadn't hit you before, but at least you're among many friends now that it has.

I didn't want to use the word "ignorant" since I didn't want to offend the OP.

Try leaving the HR20 on 24/7. I had the same problem, but only when I would turn the DVR on from standby. Hasn't happened since.

That worked for me for five days, then bam, two BSB's in 24 hours, and not only that I had two failed recordings. As of yet I have not had a failed recording so long as I put the unit in standby every night. As they say, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, so it could be a coincidence.

I get the bsb also, tried leaving it on 24 hours like you did and mine would miss the recordings in the morning, last night I put it in standby and this morning it was recording what is was suppossed to. I must admit leaving it on 24/7 did slow down the bsb's some. Well we all asked for OTA and we got it but we got more problems. Funny though I did not get the bsb for over a week after the upgrade, funny thing is I wonder if this is something in the stream that directv is sending out since the hr10 tivo owners say they are having problems also.
While this will not solve 100% of the problem, try do the following to help minimize your exposure to this bug:

1. Leave the unit "on" (don't put it in standby mode when you leave it)

2. Do NOT leave it tuned to an HD MPEG-2 data stream - This could be DirecTV HD or OTA HD (MPEG2)

3. Try leaving the HR20 tuned to an MPEG4 channel (your HD locals on DirecTV)

Obviously if you have a recording on an MPEG2 channel, then it will tune to that channel to make the recording - nothing you can do about that without canceling the recording. Most of the problems are highly tilted toward being on an MPEG2 channel, particularly an HD channel and very particularly ESPN-HD for long periods of time.

I have noted that there is lip sync "creep" on ESPN-HD where after a while the audio and video get way out of sync. Perhaps at some point, the distance is too great and the software chokes. Perhaps I'm just wrong.

Either way, the times that I have had problems were related to being tuned to an MPEG2-HD broadcast of some sort for an extended period of time. I'm usually tuned to and MPEG4-HD channel and don't experience these problems.

I'm believe it was a Marketing decision to release OTA vs. fixing the BSB. I also believe that the volume of "complaints" over BSB has actually been smaller than the volume of "complaints" of not having OTA, so they probably made the right decision. If it weren't for the Christmas/New Year's holiday period, I bet we would already have a fix for the BSB. It's just bad timing for this type of bug.

Saying someone is ignorant isn't offensive. I just means he doesn't know, which is basically what you said.

Hmmmm....it seems to me that the rate of reporting the BSB skyrocketed after the 0x10b update. I've never had it, so I'm an innocent bystander at this point. I don't recall 80% of those reporting saying they had experienced the BSB before this last update, but the data wasn't being collected then either.

It's really hard to get a "comfortable" handle on this one.

Sorry I wasn't clear. Yes, I believe that the BSB reared it's ugly head with the 0x10B release (possibly in 0x104 and/or 0x108 which did NOT go national). However, prior to 0x10B there was a significant amount of chomping at the bit over OTA. I believe (without fact to substantiate) that the clamor over OTA prior to 0x10B was greater than the clamor over BSB is today.
You bet, and I was one of the "clamorers". I'm glad they responded, as OTA in the HR20 has worked very well for me. I get all the major networks, including PBS. I'm missing some sub-channels, CW and one other very small channel with next to nothing on it. So, I guess I lucked out...OTA works, no BSB for me....unfortunately, neither are true for some others.

Thanks for that input, Doug. I haven't seen this (or properly understood it) until you gave this excellent explanation. I've seen the BSB twice in the past week (I'm grateful that's all) and for the first time I've been frequently leaving the DVR tuned to ESPNHD -- especially at night. But I've also been turning to Standby each night -- so I think I'll continue the Standby but tune away from ESPNHD (specifically a local HD). Not your specific recommendation, but if it's tuner related, the coincidence with ESPNHD may still be the key.
I know MTNAGEL called it overkill, but ever since that total reset, I have not had the problem again If you don't have a lot of things to lose. Try going to the menu, then set-up. Scroll down to reset and then reset it. You will lose everything you have saved!!! But Like I said it worked for me. Now that I said this, the black screen is going to happen the next time I start my hr20 up.
I just had this happen on a recording of The O.C. Black screen and I can't fast forward or anything. I can't RBR right now because Shark is recording. My guess is I'm fubared :( Please fix this now D*!!!!

OTA, MPEG-4 or SD?
