Tonight's Dancing with the Stars is scheduled to end at 10:01, something I either didn't notice when I originally set up the SL last week, or something ABC changed over the past few days that the HR scheduler picked-up. Thank goodness I checked my TODO list this morning, because I'm also recording Heroes and planned to record CSI Miami at 10, which got bumped because of lower priority.

What's more a PITA than ABC's bad behavior, though, is that I can not set up a SL to either "end one minute early" or "start one minute later", which means I had to cancel my Dancing SL and replace it with a recurring manual, because I notice next Monday's ends at 10:01 as well. And since Dancing is also on other nights, I have to set up a recurring manual for those nights as well.

DirecTV, I beg you, please take a lon, hard look at our "negative padding" Wish List request, which has been on the list for as long as I can remember:

"Negative padding" OPTION. The ability to schedule a recording to start late or end early by "N" minutes.

TIA. /steve

Or implement "overlap protection" like TIVO, then you don't have to worry about setting negative padding, let the priority take care of it.
+1. We have a request similar to that on the Wish List as well:

When a scheduled recording's start or end time will slightly conflict with scheduled recordings in a different time slot, do not cancel any recordings. Record one as a "partial".

The INFO balloon for the request reads:

If one of the recordings has an identical future episode already in the GUIDE, make that one the "partial" and schedule a subsequent "full" recording, if it will not create a new conflict. Otherwise complete the earlier recording and have the lower priority later recording start late, or use absolute priority to determine which of the recordings should end early or start late.

EXAMPLES: Show A, originally scheduled to record from 8-9 on Monday is extended to 9:01. Shows B & C are scheduled to record from 9-10. Case 1: Prioritizer order is A first, then B, then C. Show A has an identical episode scheduled to air Sat night. Record partial A, full B, full C and add Saturday's A to the ToDo list as well. Case 2 (favor earlier recording, no add'l episodes available): Priority is B, C, A. Record full A, full B, partial C. Case 3 (priority rules, no add'l episodes available): Priority is B, C, A. Record partial A, full B, full C.

I like it except for one thing... Priority should not rule... a shows ending should have priority over a shows beging...

Even better, stop watching Dancing with the Stars.

Now if it was Dancing with the Stars when Animals Attack, that would be a different story. :D

Now that is a show that I would set up a SL for! :)

All of the broadcast networks are now playing this game to keep you from switching channels when their show is over and they wonder why cable shows are creaming them in overall audiences? ABC (disney, ala Walt spinning in his grave) is the worst of the lot, which is why I have 0 (as in Zero) SLs set for any shows on that network now.

I know this is annoying, but isn't it a bit overkill to boycott a network because of it? There isn't much worth watching on ABC, but I sure wouldn't miss Lost because it started at 9:02!

One quick idea for you for now. Setup your series link for Dancing but set it lower then CSI and Heroes. Then set your recurring manual for Monday. This should catch it on any night but Monday automatically and your manual will catch Monday.

I agree though, negative padding please.

Since in this poll, folks were split about 50/50 over whether to let PRIORITY rule, or to complete the first recording, the request was worded in such a way to let DirecTV decide what to do.

Apparently, the folks at TiVo decided that priority should rule in their version of this request. Safest way out, I guess. /steve

In retrospect, I wonder if ABC was trying to do me a favor? The writing on that CSI Miami episode was absolutely the worst I've seen on prime-time in recent memory. I'm surprised the actors were able to deliver their lines with straight faces. /steve

All I can say is, I can't wait until the Directv Tivo units come out in the spring. I'm gonna drop this piece of crap HR20 as fast as possible. This thing has caused more marital conflicts than anything else in the last 16 years of marriage.
ABC scheduling shows until :01 or :02 isn't DirecTV's fault. You'd have the same scheduling issues on the TiVo.

BTW, I don't believe the DirecTiVo units are scheduled to come out until the second-half of 2009. /steve

Certainly, scheduling issues aren't Directv's fault. But regardless of fault, Tivo found a way of dealing with the problem.

This reason alone isn't why I think these things are terrible, there are soooo many other really good reasons. Too many to mention, in fact. I've had two units now. Each one with their own set of problems. My latest is only 2 days old and for some reason, it wants to record all episodes of a show even though I setup the series link to record only first runs.

This unit was sent in the hopes that it would take care of the multitude of black-screen recordings I've been getting for the last 3 weeks. I still have to worry if that problem is going to rear its ugly head.

I NEVER had these worries with my Tivo. Everytime I go to watch a recorded program, I have this anxiety that doesn't go away until I actually see that the program recorded.
