Well this is the 1st problem i've had in over a week but on my main HR20 Boston Legal was in the to do list but when I was finished watching Friday Night Lights which was recorded Boston Legal was not recording. On my 2nd HR20 it was recording fine.

Any ideas on why this happened?

Do you see any upcoming "Boston Legal" episodes in the "To Do List"? Maybe that HR20 doesn't actually have a Series Link set up?
I do there is a recording set to take place on 10/31. I thought it might have been a repeat but when I watched it on my backup it was not. Wierd. You know also when you have the guide up and highlight a show, it does not tell you if it is a repeat, you must go to the large info screen to get that information. This is a minor inconvience (spelling probably wrong).

If one DVR was recording it fine and one wasn't it must have been user error on the DVR that wasn't recording it.
That's what i'm thinking. But could "I" have actually done something wrong instead of a software glitch. I think not!! LOL

No, it was not user error. My HR20 misses recordings all the time. This is a "bug". They are "working on it". They have been working on the software bugs for weeks now. My HR20 misses about 50% of the recordings it is scheduled to make.

50% ?

What shows? What Channels..

I have 39+ Series LInks setup accross my two HR20's.
And neither one has missed any episode of any show from the primetime schedule...
(I personally don't watch the kid's shows or the daytime soaps, but my wife hasn't chopped my head off yet... )

Last night it missed This old House Classics from HGTV, a series link. This morning it missed Fields of Armor, a 3am series link recording on The Military Channel. Yesterday it missed World War II Battlefront, a series link on The Military Channel.

Earl, I follow this forum fairly close; this missing recordings thing is a known bug, right? Should I ask for a new machine (like that will do any good since they are out of them).

I also have a theory. The reason some people have very few problems and others have lots of problem is because the machines are not all the same.
Direct TV, in their wisdom, bought parts from different manfacturers. Some machines may have a video chip made by manufacturer A and other machines may have a video chip made by manufacturer B. Each chip requires a slightly different coding sequence to control it. Therefore, the programmers are having to write more than one set of instructions to control a particular component. This would explain why some machines work fine, and other don't.

Actually right now....
All the HR20-700s are identtical... they are all built by the same manufacturer using the same source for teh components.

If there was a difference, you would have to see a difference in the software builds, and some indication in the unit of which "sub-model" it is.
As the R15's are (R15-100; R15-300; R15-500)

I would say that I have never tried recording those shows..
I'll have to take a look at them.
Any chance those episodes where already on your hard drive from a previous airing? As the HR20/R15 will not re-record a show that it finds on the hard drive, (provided it can identify it as the same show), unless you specifically tell it to do so.

I have 2 HR20s I have both recorded exactly the same series links. I have lost 2.5 men, studio 60, boston legal. Havent noticed any other "lost" recordings yet. This may be common issue only on one of the receivers but I can not be sure about that. It was the HR20 that had problems loading initially when in living room but when we moved it to bedroom it loaded fine. I will try to pay attention and see if lost recordings only happen on the one HR20.

If one of the HR20s in his house was recording it and one wasn't like he said it was then YES, is was user error.

I have about 6 (including Boston Legal and House) and have never missed one. I thought I missed two last night...guess what....the box is smarter than I am...they were re-runs and I have restricted my recordings to first run. Nice job HR20!

So, Earl why are some of these DVR's recording so flawlessly, and others are not? You say the machines are identical. OK. Then are the machines that are failing defective? If they are I will call DirectV and ask for a replacement.

I have also been getting lots of blank recordings. One time the machine was off and I noticed it was not recording a series because the yellow light on the front was not on; so I turned the DVR on and it started recording.

I am also having the no response to DVR commands from the remote control thing happeing. I change to a different channel and the remote operates normally.

And why do your machines work fine and mine doesn't?

Tonight I was taping 'LOST". I have it set up to auto record. I checked the guide at 9:2 and it was actively taping and had the R for recording. At 10 I went to play it, and it was in my myVOD. I hit play and the screen was black. It showed the bar of progress at the bottom but would not move. All other shows worked fine. I rebooted my machine and when it came backup the LOST episode was LOST. History says it was taped. Nothing stating deleted.
This is the 2nd time I had a problem. First time was taping a show that was set to tape but when I went to watch it the next day it was gone and marked DELETED in the history.
It makes you a little gun shy to trust it!

I had a slighlty different issue. I recorded a monday show on cbs SD (no cbs hd available yet). Went to play it last night and first few minutes the video was "hung showing a city scene" yet the audio was working just fine. At first I thought it was part of the show but realized something was wrong. All of a sudden the Video came up to speed with audio.

I am ashamed to say it was the 'biggest loser'! But both were on local HD Channels, though LOST is broadcast in HD while Biggest loser was not. No idea if that makes a difference with recording problems. My only other recording problem was Grey's Anatomy on a HD broadcast. To recap: 'LOST' did not record and Biggest Loser DID.
