I noticed on the Directv website it lists the required download speed for On Demand as 750 mbs. Mine is almost that fast (I just checked it as 657 mbs) and I was wondering if it will still work. Is it just a question of the downloads being slower? I could live with that.

No harm in trying, but it will likely take hours to download a 30 minute SD program.

It all depends on how patient your are and how well you plan ahead. If you want to watch a show immediately, you might be frustrated.

Buy if you want to have it on your DVR to watch at a later date, then you will probably not mind the service.
