If the rule applied DIRECTV could discount their own service, just not the NFL ST package.
That would be a huge slap in the face for the substantial majority of DIRECTV subscribers that don't opt for the NFLST package. There's always been a suspicion that all subscribers were subsidizing sports but this would be a "nuclear option".

Former 15+ year directv sat customer. Interesting debate on this thread. Kinda reminds me of the ’less filling’ vs ‘taste great’ ad. It’s all about individual value recognition. For me, I ditched a $250 a month satellite bill with wonky equipment for their streaming product, saving $100 a month and love it. A few less channels that are practically meaningless to me and I spend a half the savings on all the streaming services. I have better PQ and all the content I want. I can watch everything anywhere on any device. i only wish it happened earlier. Oh, and I don’t feel like I’m being ripped off for not calling and threatening to drop them every 6 months. And it doesn’t have 73 different fees tacked on. They even dropped the unlimited DVR fee.

You've completely missed his point. Anyone who's watched TV for the last 70 years knows how advertising is the life blood of TV (not to mention ANY kind of media). Nobody is disputing that. The argument for a la carte pricing is that it's cheaper to bundle 5 channels together (even though some are low viewership) than it is to charge for each, thus if everything is a la carte, they you will pay more for channel...
I’ve been saying that since the 90’s. When a cable, satellite, or even streaming provider offers a package, everyone in that package makes some money. With millions watching, all these channels get funding to make programs. Some you watch, others you don’t. That is different for other people. So you spread the funding to support variety. But if you went a La carte the less popular channels would have to charge a premium price and would probably fail. You loose content and only a handful of channels would survive and you be paying premium prices for each, probably more than you pay now for a package. So less overall content for more money. I was not n that businesd for some time, and a la carte would kill TV as we know it.

For those who have subscribed to (or have been gifted) NFL Season Ticket, it doesn't matter how DISH pricing compares if you don't have the NFLST option.

That will change in the 2023-4 season.
Agree no NFL ST, no 4K sports (beyond fox events) and no RSNs on dish or a lot of OTT providers

DirecTV is the true winner for sports fans

Very weird just called Directv and for some reason I no longer have the Sunday Ticket on my account after having it auto renew every year. Last year they gave it to me for free and the rep said they may contact me to give it to me again for free but I haven't heard anything. Anyone else dealing with this? Last year they have it and they are going to give me a hard time about the discount and not have it auto renew anymore?

Yew I'm definitely NOT a fan of all this a la cart streaming crap

We pay enough for TV all these shows should be included

Nfl for example the prime games should be included in the new NFL ST , we shouldn't have to pay for NFL ST, and then Amazon prime for TNF

Thats one thing I hate about MLB now , not only do u need MLB EI/.TV, but u need apple crap for Friday nights , peacock for Sunday 12 noon games and yankees fans would need Amazon prime as well ... the premium sports package should include ALL games . We are paying a premium for the season, should include all games !

I know NFL is slightly different since it deals with local channels but still TNF should be included .

The equation changes radically come the 2023-4 season. Not only with NFLST but perhaps also with the landscape of RSNs which seem to be getting less settled all the time.

Having NFLST include the TNF games seems unlikely even if Amazon is the winner unless there's a subtantial price bump for those who don't have Amazon Prime memberships.

Hard pass on streaming for me. I’ve tried it and didn’t like it. Mark my words the folks that have good internet connections you will be fine but there will be issues for some who want NFL Sunday Ticket who don’t have fast wi-fi yet. I just hope DIRECTV retains NFL Sunday Ticket in some sort of fashion. It might not be exclusive anymore after 2022, but hopefully they keep it & open it up to other platforms so the people who don’t stream can still see their out of market games.

That's not a "suspicion", everyone knows that non sports viewers have been subsidizing sports viewers for a couple decades.

That's the obvious outcome of it being nearly impossible to get a cable/satellite package without ESPN or RSNs. You aren't paying $20+ month for your locals to fund production of Survivor and The Simpsons, it is because of the huge prices networks pay for sports rights. TNT and TBS cost nearly $4/month collectively because of the sports they carry. FX costs much less even though it carries basically the same amount of movies and original programming, because it carries no sports.

How many of those 250+ channels are you actually watching? The way DTV sets up their tiers you have to go to Ultimate to get it all. Once they add on all of the fees for DVR, Advanced Receiver, Regional Sports, etc you are looking at $175/month for one TV. Have more TVs? Start racking up the additional charges. And god forbid if you have been a long time subscriber with a 5 or 6 TVs and you need to upgrade your old HR21-100s. Have an extra $2k laying around to pay for equipment that you lease? Oh, and after that they want to have you pay an additional $9/month to protect the equipment that you don't own and you pay to lease just in case it fails. SMH Tack on a couple premium channels at you're over $200 and locked into a 2 year contract. Sure, you can get DTV for $100/month, but you won't be getting very much. Sure, they call it 160+ channels, but geez 1/2 of them are music channels and 1/4 of them are spanish.

I challenge you. Write down every show you've watched this year and which service it was on. How many unique services did you get? Was is 300? 200? 100? 50? I'll bet it is less than 25. It's that set that you actually watch that you should be paying for, not the other 225+.

YouTubeTV gives you 85+ channels for $65
Hulu Live TV gives you 75+ for $70

Something missing? Pay for it's stream separately for $4-$8/month. Premiums cost the same or less than DTV, especially if you bundle.

75% of what I watch is on Hulu, Netflix, and Broadcast for locals, so I have no need for YouTubeTV or Hulu Live. The rest is on Prime, Showtime, and HBOMax which costs me a whopping $37/month (Yeah, throwing in the $12/month for Amazon Prime through I'd pay for Prime if their streaming service didn't exist). Netflix is free as I have TMobile service and Hulu is $13 (no ad plan). $50/month and there isn't a show or service I want to watch that isn't available. Heck, if you want to do the numbers game, I receive 130+ channels on my antenna and have a Amazon Replay DVR to hoover it all up and I don't have to pay an additional $10/month for the privilege.

Are you trying to tell me that you don't pay for internet because you have DTV? You have internet and pay for it anyway, so it is a sunk cost either way. Why not actually get more value out of the service you are already paying for? But I'll play. I have 600mbps service for $45 all-in with taxes. Add that to my streaming costs and we're at $95/month plus about $5 in taxes on the streaming services. $100/month and I want for nothing. What is your bill total with DTV and Internet service?

On top of that, I don't pay for my premiums all year. When a series I like is over and nothing much else is on, I just cancel with a couple clicks instead of fighting with a CSR for 30 minutes on the phone and then resubscribe, generally with a "come back for 1/2 price for 3 months" when I do. I had Starz for $0.99/month for 18 months because every time I went to cancel after the 3 months for $0.99 they extended the offer to get me to stay. Took my wife that long to plow through the 77 seasons of Outlander and Godz. I cancelled and now I get an e-mail every week asking me to come back for $0.99 and I will once there is something I want to watch. Have a single show, say Better Call Saul on AMC, pay for the service for a couple months at $9 or buy the whole season on Amazon for $9.99 and watch it whenever you want. Want to check out Ted Lasso, well you can't get it on DTV, so you'll pay $5/month for AppleTV+ and need to buy a box to stream it on since DTV won't allow the service on their box.

Yup, they just don't have to pay $250/month to watch 10% of the services they pay for.

TL;DR Version: Streaming allows you to watch anything you want and pay for it al a carte for a lot less. The only thing you couldn't get on streaming was NST, but soon you will.
I need to follow you once I'm ready to cancel. Lol. I pay $100 for Choice with a Genie & 2 HD receivers cause I needed more storage. I get a $10 discount as long as I don't upgrade my equipment. I get free HBO cause of AT&T but they took the code off my account so I have to call every month & have a 20+ minute call to get it credited. And yes, it included a AT&T discount built in along with another one just to get it to $100. Only 2 of us really watch cause 1 kid doesn't watch TV & the other streams. And we don't watch most of the channels but there are a couple hubby watches where I can't drop to lower package.

I pay Spectrum $100 a month for 400mbps and for phone. I have Hulu/Disney+ for $20 and Apple for $5 and Starz for $3 a month for 6 months. Prime & Apple I get on my TV and I think my Firestick has them too.

Think when I leave I will do YouTube for the local channels & NFL Network & MLB Network, and Discovery+ for things hubby watches.

It isn't up to DIRECTV since they have committed to not competing for the package going forward. DIRECTV is hopeful that they can carry the package but it's entirely up to "the winner" as to whether or not that's an option.

I suspect that it is less than likely given that AT&T almost certainly won't be footing the balance of the bill as they are currently. I'm also betting that DIRECTV doesn't really have a handle on how many subscribers are going to jump ship to some other MVPD (including DIRECTV Stream) absent the NFLST exclusive.

Exactly, I do the same. I rarely watch NFL Network for example, but sometimes they show an old game I would rewatch or some other special. It's nice to have that option and know that it's not costing me more because it's in my bundle (obviously, we choose our bundles based on what has the channels we watch often). And I've been saying for awhile that when you go strictly streaming you eventually are going to wind up paying the same. Eventually the price will continue to rise as more and more content has to be delivered. We are seeing it more and more. AND, you are losing a lot of the best DVR features, including my favorite, the ability to skip ads. Now I have to PAY for the privilege of watching ads, or pay a premium to get rid of them (and even THEN sometimes they force it on us.) Netflix is going to an ad based scheme, because they want to offer a cheaper alternative. I will bet, withing 10 years or less, those non ad based plans go away. Advertising dollars are too easy for services to give up. AND, we won't have the option to skip them either.
That's what I'm wondering. Am I keeping it for convenience or is it really going to cost about the same? And I watch Paramount+ & Discovery+ with ads and can't stand them. I hate when some local shows I stream when I missed them I can't fast forward ads. I'm spoiled from my dvr & no ad Hulu.

But if I save $30 a month that can be put towards Sunday Ticket might be worth it.

Cant you say the same for kids programming?....Id say they split programming 1/3,1/3,1/3.
The number of hours of children's programming viewing is likely a whole lot more than those spent watching sports. Further, children seem undeterred by watching the same content over and over again.

NO! Were talking about subsidizing!...Disney aint cheap...Nor is Nick...MTV....Its a long list especially if you want to say for decades....TLC was classic kids programming all morning and changing in the evening....You blame sports, do the same to other nitch channels and shows.

Reportedly the new contract will make charging a price similar to the current $300 a requirement for the new rights holder. Requested by the networks when they signed their huge new contracts, to reduce the number of people who want out of market games instead of the in market games they (and therefore their affiliates) are spending so much money for.

Even if Directv had been willing to keep it they would have been required to drop the freebies after this season.
There is no evidence that is true. It is a claim that was made without any proof in an online article by John Ourand and then quoted by other bloggers, as if quoting an unsubstantiated claim somehow makes it a fact. The article claimed the NFLST package would have to be offered at a "premium price", without saying what price that would be. A legal contract would not use non-specific language like "premium price", which could be interpreted to mean anything. And if Ourand really had inside knowledge of what is in those contracts, he would be able to provide the specifics.

He has his sources ... He just can't name them. Nearly everything about the future of ST is hearsay anyways. It will all shake out soon enough.

For the record I have never once called in to DIRECTV as an NFL Sunday Ticket Subscriber and tried to get it for free. I have always paid for it except for this upcoming season (2022) where I received a notice that I was getting it free because of my loyalty to DIRECTV. Been with them since 1997 and have had every pro sports package they have carried NFL, MLB, NBA, & NHL. This will be the first season EVER that i’m getting it for free. I will pay to keep the package in the future if DIRECTV retains it. I just don’t want to be forced to stream as I have said previously. It just isn’t for me.
