OTA was free (and for the most part still is non-subscription) because there was no way to make viewers pay. Networks and stations could sell their viewers to advertisers but there was no mechanism to stop people from watching "for free". Even after the introduction of digital OTA which does allow access control, subscription OTA has not taken off. It may with the next level of digital OTA - but without some unified mechanism to control content I don't see subscription OTA as viable. Even though it does exist in a few places.

OTA broadcasters finally found a way to monetize their content (beyond advertising) when cable companies decided to rebroadcast their signals. Instead of viewing cable rebroadcast as a gift to reach more viewers, they saw it as a way to charge for reception. Once they started charging they didn't turn back and in recent years the networks have required their affiliates to charge for rebroadcast and pass a good portion of the fees back to the network. The networks have also gone the streaming route ... OTA is one transmission of many shows. If you miss it, buy it on demand and either pay by watching commercials or a monthly fee. Got to find some way to monetize their content.

The NFL owns their content, so they only have to worry about paying their content creators (players and teams) and they have something to sell. A good portion of their money comes from selling to OTA broadcasters who are willing to spend a few billion dollars for a single airing of each game. Rebroadcast rights reserved by the NFL. Out of market rights reserved by the NFL. Not a bad scheme to pay the bills.
OTA remains free for another reason and that is the NFL's Broadcast Anti-Trust exemption. This exemption allows the NFL to negotiate broadcast deals and share revenue among all the teams. If the NFL tried to take every game off free OTA television, I suspect Congress would revisit the exemption.

NextGen TV has the same conditional access control mechanisms as DTV and more. The fact that many of these programs will be delivered via broadband is the problem.

I dont want streaming cause i have a DVR and I can pause/replay/record. Why would I want to mess with streaming? I hope they dont make this streaming only because this is really the only reason I keep Directv at all. (Sunday Ticket and Hockey package). If you are going to make me learn to stream crap, then I am just moving on. My parents are old and can barely run the TV remote. I am not going to try to teach them how to stream. Just not worth it.

The NFL copy of this is completely worthless. It will be sad if they dont continue this with Andrew as the host.
I doesn’t matter what you or we want, DirecTV didn’t even negotiate to extend after this season so it’s done- time to stick a fork in it and relish/enjoy the last year of this while you have it with your setup. All good things come to an end.

And no one else is talking about Andrew Siciliano doing his weekly masterful performance on RedZone with DirecTV like you brought up. I’ve been thinking that for months now. When I didn’t sub to NFLST for one year like 5 years ago, I did the NFL version of RedZone. Hated it and stopped paying the monthly fee on my NFL App. Other years when I didn’t get discounts on ST, I was able to get DirecTV standalone RedZone for free, but that was few and far between.

Maybe Siciliano takes over the NFL version of RedZone after this year, since he’s already part of NFL Network Programming?

And don’t let some of the others get to you here. They push DStream because it is actually good, but they still have DSat too for certain reasons.

(Sorry compnurd, no offense. 😀)

Yeah internet outages happen from time to time. Just wait until the first time a major outage happens on a Sunday. Lots of people won’t be able to stream their Sunday game. 😆 Satellite or Cable are still more reliable than a stream anyday of the week. Wake up DIRECTV and retain Sunday Ticket for christs sakes.

Just because DIRECTV didn’t negotiate to keep Sunday Ticket doesn’t mean they can’t negotiate to retain it. Unless a streaming service negotiates it to be exclusive, I am hopeful that it opens up for multiple outlets including Satellite and Cable.

People stream Sunday ticket now on Sunday’s without issue
YTTV has more than twice as many subscribers then Sunday ticket has now and doesn’t have streaming issues

Uh, you're not Christ. DIRECTV isn't going to spend $2+ billion per year to make you happy. And the real Christ has better things to do on Sunday than watch the NFL, IMHO.

What you'd lose if NFLST goes streaming is the ability to watch multiple live games at once by pausing one, switching to the next until you catch up to live, pausing it and switching to another...
I'd consider that style of viewing to be "advanced". A lot of buttons to push and a tuner dedicated to each game. Someone who did that would probably be able to figure out a new interface. Hopefully whomever designs the app supports multiple stream pausing and content searching. Just because it is streaming doesn't mean it has to be a steaming mess.

In the two plus years I've had DirecTV Stream, I can't tell you the last time I had an internet outage. I can tell you that weather outages with DirecTV satellite, while fairly rare, did happen a number of times with storms and heavy rain, even on a well aligned dish.

Wake up? DIRECTV had an exclusive on NFL ST for years and always lost money. If all 2 million subscribers actually paid the $300 for it that only brings in $600 million dollars. I doubt the commercial carriage brought them close to breaking even at $1.5 billion. Do you think if DIRECTV wakes up they will suddenly magically sell 10 million subscriptions to break even at the rumored $3 billion price tag the NFL wants? But you think they should do it just for you? Good luck staring at that blank wall on Sunday afternoons.

Netflix is adding an ad-supported tier to gain subscribers they aren't getting now, not to lose subscribers they already have, which is why there will continue to be an ad-free version of Netflix (and other major streamers). If you can't afford the ad-free tiers, the cheaper tiers are designed for you. Kind of like going to a ballgame and sitting in the bleachers.
You realize that Netlifx has been LOSING subscribers, which is why they went this route.

It's gotten too expensive, especially when there's more and cheaper competition. The hope is that if they offer the cheaper, ad supported tier, they will stick around. Hulu for example, in 2019 had 70% of their subscribers on the ad supported plan. I can't find anything newer, but I'd bet it's even a higher percentage now, considering the incentives they've been offering to get you to sign up for the ad supported tier, be it through bundles offered with ESPN+ and Disney or their Black Friday deals for $2 a month (the deal I have, as I don't find it worth spending more for Hulu as there's only a few things I watch there). Hulu's advertising revenue has skyrocketed. At some point, it's going to be worth it to just get rid of the ad-free plan if they can guarantee more eyeballs to advertisers.

Based on the replies on these threads of how reliant some people are on their DVR services to avoid watching ads, some people are willing to sell the farm just to avoid a few commercials. The ad-free tier is still going to survive in some way, shape, or form.
I remember the days when people swore up and down they'd never watch ads again, and then subscribe to ad-supported tiers of various services and "live" with it. Yes, there are always going to be a few people like that. Is it enough to support the cost of that tier (or lack of profit?) Again, what price would those people pay? What if the price went up to $40 a month, while the ad-supported tier is $10? How many die hards are left? I suspect, that out of the die hard ST users who are complaining about how things are changing, that the vast majority of them will port over to the new system. The games are what matters, not the tech. Again, here, remember, we are the tech savvy bunch, but most users aren't. Don't go by what you read here, we are NOT the vast cross section of users.

If you want to watch the games bad enough, you'll subscribe. If you don't you won't. It's that simple. For me, I never paid for ST, because I don't care about the games. I can watch plenty of football without it. It's nice to have when it didn't cost me anything. What streaming does is open it up to many more subscribers. Obviously current subscribers will have to decide who important potentially losing those features is to them (and we really don't know what features the new system will have. It's only speculation at this point). The games are what matter, you either want them or you don't.

I am not gonna stream period. It’s too much hassle. Sorry I am not moving on and If it ever comes to streaming television only, I’ll stare at the wall before I’ll stream anything. Streaming SUCKS!
Bet you wouldn't!! If streaming was the only option (and that day is coming, even cable companies are transitioning there), you'd make it work. And the experience has been getting exponentially better for many of us, and will continue to improve for the rest of us too.

And I've had rain fade that knocked my dish out, causing missed recordings, not to mention storms that ruined the alignment of my dish and I had to get someone out to fix (which could take days). I agree, not everyone has broadband that's reliable. That will change as the tech improves and it's built out to more and more folks.
