There are rumors that Directv will retain commercial or maybe even commercial + satellite residential rights via sublicense.

If say Apple got it and plans to charge $300, they could allow Directv to sell it for example for $350 and showing Apple's inserted ads or $400 and letting Directv insert their own ads. Not only would they make more than selling to those customers directly (so they wouldn't look at as a competition) they'd more money overall since they'd catch those customers who either can't stream or are older people who refuse to mess with newfangled technology like my mom (not an NFL fan, but she refuses to have anything to do with streaming even though she's got fast internet and a smart TV) Even if there were only 250K such residential satellite only customers that's $100M towards what they're paying.

Having Directv sell commercial rights makes too much sense. Every bar that wants to carry NFLST already has Directv, it isn't like there's an untapped market of bars that are set up for streaming on all their TVs but can't do satellite like there is in the residential market. Directv is already set up to do the billing and everything else, so let them handle the hassle and Apple can just cash the checks and worry about what they're good at - innovation on the consumer side.

No one knows what's going to happen until it is announced, so it is pointless to worry about who is going to be cut off from NFLST before then. It is in the interest of whoever buys the rights to maximize its potential distribution, since they will be paying the NFL a fixed cost.

UP TO 100Mbps not all area have the same backhaul and rural areas? also what is the high speed cap on that 5G?
it can be as low as 50GB and that will not last to long with 4+ streams.

Are people assuming that NFL will simply look to offer the ST service to highest bidder like Google/YTTV, Apple, Amazon, Hulu, Yahoo?

To me it’s no different content than what all the content networks are doing with Disney+, ESPN+, HBOMAX, Paramount+. Content creators would seem to make more selling direct to consumer via their own smart TV, IOS or Android app (incl streamers like Roku and ATV).

If NFL leaves DTV I will be saying goodbye to DTV. Have already scaled back to minimum package with ST and reduced my TVs with receivers to just 3, and all the other TVs in the house are YT TV with apps for the various service. We prefer the ala carte.

really? I have used both and youtube TV is such a serious step down in quality and function over my directv dvr setup.

For a couple years, after the NFL season ended, I put Directv on a 6 month vacation hold. Then subscribed to YouTubeTV for that 6 month period. It was a substantial savings during that period. And YTT had some things I liked better than DirecTV. Last year, DirecTV gave me a $50/mo credit for 12 months to continue with NFL ST. So I stayed on DirecTV all year.

If they lose the NFL ST rights to a streaming service. I will definitely cancel Directv and move to YouTubeTV full time. Then during the NFL season, I'll subscribe to the streaming service that offers NFL ST.

There is a restaurant/bar in my general area that uses IPTV through Sling or YouTube TV I believe. They have occasional buffering issues which will be a pain during a last minute drive of a football game.

I cut the cord and went to DirecTV Stream. I hate the delay since I get notifications that something has already happened in a game I am watching.

I read somewhere that one of the Canadian providers is trying to develop technology to eliminate the delay of streaming. We’ll see about that.

Well no one can say for certain how it will go but on Peacock and Apple TV with MLB you can go back for a about a week and watch the Apple TV+ Friday night game and the Sunday morning Peacock games have several games you can go back and watch from earlier this season.

Bars will be showing the Super Bowl on regular TV, CBS, FOX, or NBC. Sunday ticket is for regular season games only. On Sundays local games will still also be on either CBS or FOX and not streamed.

There was an article in the WSJ last year that showed streaming several different things at once doesn't take up as much bandwidth as you might think. I tried my own test here (I only get 50 Mbps) with 5 streams going. I was still getting more than half my projected speeds with no issues.

I knew that this was coming, and while it is great that more people will have access to it, it is most likely going to be a worse experience in some ways than it is now. Yes, I know streaming is the future (and most of the present), but having programs stored locally on a DVR hard drive will always make FF/REW, skipping through programs, 30-sec skip, etc. better than streaming. I have been a DTV/ST subscriber and heavy DVR user for at least 20 years now, and will continue to use DTV as long as I can continue to use my local DVR because of the TV watching experience. I will miss having ST available on that same platform and easily accessible to switch back and forth from, and I will miss the ease of flipping around to different games from the 8-game screen. Because I live in the Philly area, I have had to have some other service alongside DTV for watching local sports, so I know what the experience of watching sports on YouTube TV and Xfinity's cloud DVR is like, and it isn't as good. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised by the new ST service, and I will give whatever it is a chance, but for me it is going to mean a third service to watch what I watch on two services now. </pointless rant>

It's so amusing to see the debate on PQ regarding any service. YTTV is either indistinguishable from antenna or a horrible pixely mess. I've gone from service to service and concurrently with DTV satellite and there is very little difference. Those streaming boxes do a good job upscaling and I'm not crazy about 1080i over 720p. And the streaming services typically do 720p.

Sunday Ticket is hideously expensive and only when there is a time where money doesn't matter will I consider it. Will be interesting to see the new price in the fall.

The article that started this round of discussion (at Pro Football Talk) said:
"Appearing on CNBC, Roger Goodell said that Sunday Ticket will exit DirecTV after the 2022 season."

No such caveat adding an "unless".

Pro Football Talk continues:
"Via Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com, Goodell said that Sunday Ticket will end up with a streaming service, and that a decision will be made this fall."

I posted this in another thread (the one about Sunday Ticket in the streaming forum).

"I reached out to the author of the CNBC article on Twitter, and he told me that while DirecTV is NOT in negotiations with NFL regarding Sunday Ticket, DirecTV, plans to reach out to the winner to "discuss ideas".

Here is the question I asked and his answer on Twitter:

Question: "Is the potential for @DirecTV to continue to carry NFL Sunday Ticket and give the proceeds to the winning bidder (as mentioned in your article a couple weeks ago) still alive or is @DirecTV totally out after this season?"

Answer: "Unchanged. DTV isn’t negotiating with the league. It plans to discuss ideas with the winner, whenever one is named."

Now, whether any company would want to make this deal is certainly an open question. They very well may tell DirecTV to take a hike.

So then way would Direct say they would reach out to the winning bidder? If they can even reach a few thousand more people who cant stream why not? So true I have Spectrum & I think supposed to get 400mbps but have only got up to 300; however, I get outages & my kid is always complaining his game is lagging when the other 2 or 3 tvs are streaming & someone's phone is on WiFi. 3 of our phones have AT&T but only mine gets 4 or 5 bars so the other 2 use WiFi & the other one on T-mobile is hit or miss. I can only get Spectrum or crappy Frontier where I am & already had them.

I would not count on any distribution via DIRECTV at this time.

Once the streamer is announced we should have some idea what will happen. If it is ESPN they already have an agreement to extend ESPN+ via DIRECTV to business customers so the idea of extending "ESPN NFL Sunday Ticket" live games to business customers is practical. If it is Apple or Amazon a similar agreement could be reached.

If the streamer can make a billion dollars by having a "for business" offering via DIRECTV (or DISH or both) I expect they will make that deal. I don't expect any residential offering other than via their own streaming service.

No, what is very stupid is forcing people to switch to a streaming service when there is no reason to. There are rural areas in many areas of the country where internet service isn’t that fast yet. And this is a Satellite forum to start with so if you are so against DIRECTV what are you even doing on this site? Makes no sense. 🤬
