My HD20 recently crashed … would not get past the Blue DirecTV screen Step 1 of 2 looking for satellites.
DirecTV sent me a new receiver - HD20-700. I connected and was able to get good signal strength on all satellites. I left and came back a while later and it had a message that it was searching for Software update and had a problem. Came back later, and it looked like the software had been updated, but now it could not see any satellites.
I placed my second receiver there, and it certainly can see and receive all channels it can get [it is a Directivo and not HD]. I need help troubleshooting. Find it surprising that the unit would go bad during a SW update but I don't have any other explanation as the other unit works. I do have the B-band converters installed.

Any suggestions?

Try unplugging your power cord from the unit for 10-15 minutes and try again. Sometimes this works.

If none of that works you could have a dish or LNB problem, or a wiring problem.

Any of those suggestions might work. If not, call for help.

"HELP"
They send me one of those crappy "refurbished" HR20-700s, that were made in China. :(
Agreed. I doubt if his DVR is the problem. The "help" I was referring to was more about his system itself than the DVR. I have stopped accepting "replacement" DVRs unless I ask for one specifically.

You will note that I referred to the "replacement" rather than the "refurbished" HRs. I don't believe for a moment that anyone "refurbishes" those things.

Out of all those purportedly "refurbished" HRs that I have received, I do have three 20-700s that work. And they have worked for over a year now. That's three out of about fifty. "Refurbished" my (snipped). We oughta start a poll about how many people really believe there is such a thing as a "refurbished" HRxx.

"I'd guess" if the drive was dead, then they'd swap it out, but anything else is "just recycled" and if it came in "in working order", then the end users, would have little to no problem. BUT, if there was anything slightly "out of whack", it's just passed on.

Ya gotta wonder if the returned HRs even get out of FedEx's warehouse.

I've had a "good talk" with DirecTV about this. They contract the refurb process. Apparently they were quite impressed with "the dog and pony show" when they visited the plant.
The same DirecTV person knows "my opinion" of the quality of work quite well too.

Well, maybe you did some good. The last three replacements have all worked properly. Been a while since I got one tho.
