Can I hook up an HD receiver and a TIVO DVR?

I'm a long time directv customer with an SD TIVO DVR. I'd like to get HD with DTV but am unwilling to go with a DTV DVR.

Do I have ANY option to have a standalone DTV HD receiver and an external HD DVR such as TIVO? If so, how would it work to select programs for record, etc?

I don't think this would work. I don't know how you'd get the HD content into the TiVo.
Stand alone tivo like the series 3 and TivoHD do not support a component or hdmi input for recording. They can only record OTA and QAM. Other than using a DirecTV based DVR the only solution would be a PC based DVR with the recently released hauppauge with component inputs.

Thanks for the response. It is as I feared. Now I've got to think through my options some more.
I used to feel the same way about the DTV DVR's but I've done a complete 180 on it. I actually like it better in some ways. But anyhow if you are really stuck on the Tivo idea, you are best off with cable and cable cards on a Tivo Series 3 HD which I did for a year (technically still am) and it was fine.

Captain, your mileage may vary, but I (and many others) are quite happy with the HR2x receivers. You will need about 2-3 weeks to grow accustomed to the new interface because it is different than TiVo .. Personally I like it better.

If you have access to one at a friends house, drop by and give it spin.
You can always use both the HR10 (for OTA HD, SD channels, and a few other HD channels) and then use the HR2x for all other HD channels.

It is nice having 4 tuners, the option of using Tivo, and still get all the HD.

That's a good point .. You don't have to dump the HR10, it will just stop getting HD via the satellite soon. SD and OTA HD will continue to work.

You know that's exactly what I was considering doing. I guess it would cost me an extra reciever fee but that might be enough to get me through the fall TV season and football season. If the HR2x has too many problems I can relegate it just for HD tuner use and stick with Tivo for SD DVR.
After that I'll know for sure if my HR2x experience is different from my R15 experience.

Do they install a new dish for HD? I suppose so, that would give me the 4 lines as you suggest.

Thanks for the idea.
For those interested I've decided keep my current R10 and add a Tivo HD with an OTA antenna.
