If you want to save you scheduled recordings, that's the way - slow, but with a result.
If you don't need to keep anything on that drive - connect it to PC and just delete all partitions (Windows Disk Management could do that regardless if it native Linux EXT3).
Same time if you concern about current health of the drive, use MHDD [bootable CD] and take SMART data before and after Scan with Remap=ON. Post results here for further discussion.
