I tried to search on this but could not find the answer. Can I use more then one EHD on my 622? I dont need to use at the same time just want to know if I can add new drives as I fill them up.

Thanks all!

John,

As you know you can only use drive at a time and USB hubs are not currently supported. An easy way to use more than one external drive and make switching easy is to use a USB switch. A few of us are using them with four drives and they work very well.

What is a good source for a USB switch? Thanks for any help.

That doesn't seem to be entirely true.
You can use a bus powered USB hub with several EHDs plugged in at once as
long as ONLY one EHD is powered up at one time.
I doubt you would leave them all turned on anyway so it works out great.
This is what I am using:

The EHDs are plugged into a powerstrip with a switch next to each outlet.
I've got 4 EHDs on my 722 and 2 on my 622.
Works like a champ:up:

There seem to be many different types of USB switches. The most common types have 2+ type B connectors and one type A, and are for sharing a single device between two or more computers. I think what we need would be a single type B out to the ViP receiver, and multiple type A's for each EHD. Does that make sense?

It would be most helpful if the folks that are using switches could post their make/model info. I've been thinking about adding a second EHD to swap back and forth with my primary, and a switch would be a great way to do so.

It's easy to change the connector types by using the desired cable type. The connector on the receiver is a type A. Most USB drives I know of have a type B connector and come with a A-B cable. That said, I guess it would be best to find a switch with multiple A type connectors, but if you get one with multiple B connectiors you will just need to get a couple of type B-B cables to connect the drives to the switch.

Don,

Here is the one I am using:

http://www.national-tech.com/specs/usb-switch/40u1-40295.htm

You also need to get the USB A Female / B Male Adaptors (one is needed for each drive you have) http://www.national-tech.com/specs/usb-cable/30u1-03300.htm

I use a switch for each one of my ViP receivers. When used with the Western Digital USB drives the drive shuts down when the switch is not in that drive's position.

For remote, wireless independent power control of multiple drives, set up your EHDs on X10 power switches, one switch for each drive on a common house code, and sequential device codes for each drive. Of course, a dedicated controller or X10 IR/RF remote would work best.

Her's a link: http://www.x10.com/promotions/rca_kit_0605.html

Thanks Charles for fixing the links. Mine are now fixed.

Nick's idea is very good and that should work with a USB hub as long as power is only on for one drive at a time. I may try that if I go over four drives.

Are the EHDs interchangeable between your 722 and 622? I have a 622 hooked up in my HT room with 2 EHDs and I hope to get a 722 for the FR. I'm guessing they're not and I'll have to buy a separate EHD for the 722.
I'm sure someone here can verify this, but they are supposed to be interchangeable. My 722 and 612 work fine swapping the EHD's between them/

Yes, back and forth with no problems. You just want to verify that your house
code is a match on both DVRs before attempting. This has not been an issue yet.

Many thanks. Oh...I just thought of another question. Did you have to pay the EHD hookup fee both times for both DVRs?

You pay once per account only. The number of receivers or EHDs you use makes no difference.
