Has anyone ever heard of a way to keep from downloading an update?
Believe it or not, I have had far fewer problems with 0235 than with any other release on my HR20-700. I would rather opt out of this release until all the field testing is done.

"perhaps" if you never turn it off.
This week's update(s) only happened when I'd "turned off" my receivers.
The first night was my HR20, but my HR21 was on [I fell asleep] and didn't update.
Last night, I "turned off" my HR21, and it updated shortly after.

Something to try anyways! Good thought.

Nutshell, as long as the receiver is plugged in will download updates when they become available. Turning it off only puts it into sleep mode and it will still be listening to the satellites for any updates. If you tell it not to download it will just wait until later (usually late at night) to download it.

So no, you really cannot stop it from updating itself.

For all intents and purposes, there is no way of blocking an update. Maybe if you stared at your TV 24 hours a day with two things continuously recording and kept pushing "Update Later" when prompted but then it's still possible it could update without being given your permission.

I don't think "turning it off" makes any difference. I literally never turn off my HR20-100, and it's been getting the updates within a day or two of when the update notices are posted on these boards.

With the laundry list of items on the release notes and the intial "minor issue" with 0251, I really wish there was a way to keep from updating. I just have a bad feeling. (hope it turns out to be gas)...

Has there ever been a wish-list item for an 'Automatic Updates (on/off)' setting for these DVRs?

This has been discussed before. The idea of DirecTV having to support various software versions would be a boondoggle. It's hard enough for them to support one version; imagine the nightmare of having to support thirty.

FWIW, BattleScott, I liked 235, too, much better than 251. I only had that for a few days and it definitely was buggy. 0x0254 has worked fast and perfectly for me so far.

The only way to block an update is the same as the only way to make absolutely certain your PC won't get hacked: Unplug from power, phone, network, and everything else; then put the unit in the closet under the dirty laundry... :)

Or download a CE. Last I checked whenever I'm on a CE I never see the NR.
But you have to force an update to block an update...

You don't get the NR "update" if you're already on that version of s/w from a previous CE, but you are in fact running the same code.

I agreed with everything you said up until the dirty laundry part...

I agree it may seem nice to be able to block updates, but as has already been pointed out, it would be a nightmare for DirecTV to support an indeterminant number of active software releases. The only way they can prevent that is to force an update.

I think I agree with the OP, since there seems to be some unfinished work that needs to be accomplished, there should be a way to not allow it to be forced into your system. It is as if DirecTV is forcing the risk onto the customer, adding undo stress (if something wrong occurs, especially in this case). If you are happy with what you have why should you be forced to get something you don't want?

Well... I suppose if one wanted to pay a fee for the extra overhead it would cause... :)

No, I guess that won't work. :)

I'm not sure I understand, Microsoft does this all the time with releases. You either accept the risk and EULA or you don't and don't install. It is a change in paradigm, but very doable without cost to the consumer. With the current paradigm you're forced (pun intended) to have whatever is fed into your receiver, without an opportunity to agree or not.

I think a paradigm shift is in order...

I understand the logistics of what you're saying. But I think there is a better way to do this without forcing something on to people who may not want it.

I personally don't have issue with software change, but it is the premise of forced that bothers me.
