I've had a half dozen SL's this week fail to record - they all showed "Cancelled" in the history, even though most of the time there was nobody even near the unit to cancel it. There were no conflicts, and some of these shows were at the top of the priority list.

Is this what happens when you have too many items in your VOD list or to-do list? I had 60% available space, only about 40 items in the to-do list, and not a very big VOD list.

Meanwhile, I've deleted all of the SL's (about an hour's worth of effort) and re-created those - so far so good, but it seems like this happened before, after an update was received (the one that killed the progress bar and req'd a reset).

The "Cancelled" does not tell you much. I'm pretty sure that if you set something up to record, and then "cancelled" it yourself (before it aired), you'd see that in the History. However, if you recorded something, watched it, and then deleted it, the History would also say "Cancelled", not "Deleted".

Also if you have to reboot your unit.
All items in the todo list are "cancelled" on the reboot, because they are not in the guide when they try to validate.

They are later added back when the scheduler processes run.

Intersting. You would figure it would be something like not schuduled or that it would just disappear from the history (like it disappears from the todo list).

I hope making the history more useful is part of the next upgrade.

History, should be history. Do away with it as it's useless and use the processing/space for something that is really useful. And while they are at it, do the same with "info" as there is none. (I'd suggest improving it but can't wait another year for the updates)
These are both areas where TIVO certainly has out performed the R15. Other areas are subject to debate IMHO.

Yes there would be. It's nice to know if you deleted something, or it didn't record because it didn't air, or if the system just messed up. I use to check the history on my UTV every now and then. Most of the time the show just wasn't on (the UTV would say show preempted by broadcaster) so it was nice to know that the UTV didn't mess up and if it did I could tell it did. There was once or twice that it did that in the 3 to4 years that I had them.

The history would also give info about the tuners too. If there one of the tuners when out (cable bad or storm) you'd see "new number of tuners 0 or 1 or 2" so if you saw that something said it conflicted and there was only two shows recording at the time you could scroll back and see that it lost a tuner before the shows started (or yesterday or whenever).

In all the years I have used DVR's, I dont think I have ever checked the History. I did it a few times recently to check what people have posted about but I would not miss it.

If everything recorded as it should, would there even be a need for history?
We just used the history on our Tivo last night to find the name of a show my wife had checked out, deleted and forgotten.

The device obviously has to know it's history for it's own internal logic, so the fact that is exposed for the user is just a nice thoughtful piece of audit data. Shows good design....

I notice the cancelled items when I try and record on channels that I don't get (like NBCE and NBCW)... I noticed this when trying to record the US OPEN a while ago. I tried to simply do a series record on ESPN and CBS (I believe) and the DVR tried to autorecord on CBSE and CBSW as they were listed in all listings... Was frustrating and took a while to get the scheduled recordings correct.
