I've been able to set up Media Share with WMP11 (on a Vista PC)and here's the problem:
My Pictures, Video, and Playlists folder sync fine. When I try to go into the Media Share Music menu, nothing happens. If I go down to Playlists, I see those and can use playlists to play music. If I change a playlist in WMP11, it's immediately refelcted on Media Share. I tried erasing the entire WMP11 music library and adding just a dozen songs. Then it worked fine and I was able to access the Media Share Music folder and see those dozen songs. Next I added the rest of my music (about 4500 songs) and the Media Share Music folder became inaccessible again. I gave it a couple of days thinking it was just a slow sync, but there's been no change after 48 hours. As a work around, I tried adding all my songs to a playlist in WMP11, and THAT playlist doesn't show up in the Media Share library.

Has anybody else experienced this problem. Any ideas?

Yes, I have had the exact same problem for many, many months. As your example points out, it seems to be a problem with the number of files in your library and that's a programming issue in my opinion. I too can play my music through the playlist option, but as soon as I hit the music menu item, "Unable to play media" pops up.

I have almost 14,000 music files (most just plain MP3s) in my music library and they're in over 1000 sub-folders. I also have the same issue with pictures. Photography is one of my hobbies and I have 10's of thousands of photos on my computer. Selecting the option from the HR2x menu also gives me "Unable to play media."

Video works fine for me, but I probably have less than 60 video files.

What I just don't understand is that one of the CE software versions I downloaded around the end of 2007 (or beginning of '08) actually fixed my problems. Then it just quit again after a subsequent download.

I guess I understand if there's just simply too many files and the HR2x would sit there for too long trying to index it all. But maybe at least state that as being the problem and give the user the option to agree to wait. Or maybe a background process to index the media while in standby? I don't know, just throwing out ideas.

And lastly... for most people, switching to TVersity is really not a great option. For those of us on these forums, sure... we can do it because we're a little more computer literate than most folks. But I believe the idea is that it's supposed to auto detect your media so someone like my parents could use it. They're completely computer illiterate short of checking email and using amazon.com. They would love this media sharing feature, but setting up TVersity (or any other 3rd party software) is out of the question. Maybe it's even far fetched to assume they'd know to start WMP11 and set up their library... but that's less for them to figure out than a new software install.

Just some thoughts. I hope the DirecTV techs can figure out a solution to this.

I agree that this service needs some work. Good points. However, I don't agree that Tversity isn't user friendly for the technilogically challenged, provided they have someone to set it up for them. As the program will automatically check for updates to the various media folders you point it to, it's very "set it and forget it". Once running, all the user has to do is keep their media in designated folders. I think the technically challenged user (like my mom) wouldn't really gravitate towards the Media Share type gadget anyhow.
