Hi,
First, just got an HR34:)

I took my HR20 it was replacing to another room to replace an H20. In the process I disconnected the eSata from the HR20 during the move and then re-connected. Please bear in mind, this was working well in its prior location, and has lots of recordings still on it.

Since I reconnected the eSata using same cable, everything, I cannot get the HR20 to recognize the external drive. It's in the Antec closure. I tried the steps of resetting the HR20 while the Antec is turned off, I turn it on when the HR20 starts back up and the cicle lights turn blue, etc.

Am I forgetting something? Just because it's in another room, I don't understand why it suddenly won't work. I would've made more effort to watch the shows if I knew I was gonna lose them;)

I have an Antec and HR20, and I have to power up the Antec before I connect the sata cable to it; then, connect the cable, connect the other end to the receiver and power the receiver. If I have the cable in the Antec when it's powered, it won't come up. Really finicky setup!!

It doesnt matter what eSATA setup you use, it needs to be up and running before you plug in the DVR...it has always worked this way. It has to be recognized at power on, its not like a usb drive.

With the ANtec's I have used, I never had this issue, it just had to be powered up and running before I plugged in the DVR. Never had the cable issue you seem to experience and I used the MX-1's for over 3 years on multiple units.

I think that's what I said - the drive must be running before you fire up the DVR.

I don't question anything said previously, but the fact that I need to power my drive before connecting the sata cable to it, is just one little foible that might help the original poster - maybe not, if his drive is like yours. Mine must be special:)

Yours must have something else wrong with it. Once you have the eSATA jumper in place you should never have to touch it again if you're not moving or replacing the DVR or the enclosure.

Again, the proper way to install an external device is to have the power cords on both the external device and the HR unplugged. The eSATA to eSATA jumper cord should be in place before you do anything else. Then you plug in the external device, wait until it spins up (you'll hear it) and then plug in the HR and let it boot up.

When my HR20-700 refuses to recognize the ThermalTake/2TB setup, (after a reboot or restart), the procedure you outline works every time, and has for years.

Many times, it is not required. All I need do if the eSATA drive is missed the first time, is do a restart or (worst case) RBR and the eSATA is recognized. Only if this doesn't work, have I had to reset the receiver, power it down (unplug it), unplug the drive and then start up as you describe above. This doesn't happen often, but as a last resort, it works every time for me.

I never disconnect the eSATA cable from either the dock or the HR20-700.

INteresting. How did it become unseated? They are screwed in if put together correctly, shouldnt be able to come loose from the internal sata connections.
I was gonna ask about that too. Seems damn near impossible, no? Unless it wasn't properly screwed into place.

Very rare to have a TT/HDD not recognized by its HR. Don't remember it ever happening, but I don't remember what I had for supper last night....

That's what makes working with these boxes so challenging. Many people experience radically different results and/or problems. The key is those people (like you) who discover procedures to recover from "odd" places. It's a big help.

Perhaps the drive wasn't hold by four screws ? Then you'll need them for avoid same problem again.
That's apparently true. I originally had Best Buy take my seagate drive out of the Free Agent enclosure and put it in the Antec. Then I had the fan go bad and maybe in the process of getting that replaced the screws were not put in. Don't have the screws now, but if I run into this problem again I'll have to add them. It's pretty secure now and won't be moving around now.

It's not that hard to extract the HDDs from the Free Agent Pro and it's easy to put the HDD in an MX1. You could have done it yourself and saved some money and all the aggravation caused by BB's vaunted Geek Squad.
