We were gonna have another receiver installed in our house. The guy came out and said that he couldn't install a second line because it is impossible with the way the area is set up. The TV already has a regular D* receiver there. I was wondering if it really may be impossible, or if the installer just didn't want to install it by himself and risk wrecking our wiring and such.

sounds like a cop out, especially since you already have another receiver. All he would have to do is run another line for the second tuner.

Are you going to REPLACE your standard receiver with a DirecTV DVR? If so, would it be a HD DVR?

The HD DVR's and the R22 standard-definition DVR support a device known as an SWM. This allows both tuners to operate using just one coax cable.

If you order a DVR to replace your regular receiver, it is up to the installer to get it operating with both tuners, and since the device described above is now available, the "can't run another line" explanation is no longer valid. Unless, of course, you live in a multi-tenant building which has a master DirecTV system.

OP, did you call back D*? I will be doing the same thing as I didn't have the $99 to buy the SD DVR at time of install.

While the SWM may be just the ticket, don't forget to make the limitations clear when recommending it as a solution. All too often, the poster neglects to offer the full extent of their existing system. It is almost assured that the dish in question doesn't support SWM based on what little we know.

That's true...and so are the comments about the R16 and D12 also supporting the SWM.

I knew it was unlikely that the original poster had a SWM-capable dish which is why I tossed in that comment about the installer being responsible for getting both tuners working if only one coax was available (by upgrading the system so it WOULD work with an SWM). Considering some of the shall we say "interesting" stories in the installation forum, maybe I'm wishing for a miracle....
