I've always been able to record PPV movies and events and purchase later. Lately though, there is no "Buy" option when I select the program and if I play it, it doesn't ask me to purchase like it used to. It just tells me something along the lines of check my phone/network connection. I have not had a phone line for quite some time and I do have a wireless adapter connected and connection test runs fine. Is this a bug in a software release or something?

You mention that you have not had the phone line connected for a while, so its possible that the card has filled up with the movies you have ordered and will not allow any more until the card downloads those movies to Directv. If you look at your old bills and you don't see that you have been charged for the movies that you have ordered, then you know that they are likely still waiting to download. You should connect to a wall jack to allow the download, it has to be the wall jack, but be aware, that the movies that do download will all be charged to your next bill, so if there are a lot of them, it might be expensive. You will not be able to order anymore by the remote unless you do this.

I have not called DTV yet. I suppose I will do that next. Their automated system is annoying though.

Loretta, a wall jack will do no good since I don't have land-line phone service anymore. Everything is supposed to work since the internet is connected, and it did for a few months.

I dont think its that. He is trying to order through the reciever with no phone cord hooked up. No big deal. Order them through the internet and I bet you wont have a problem. Also ordering online means that what ever you ordered you will be able to view on all recievers you have and not just one.

ok...this is your problem. if you dont have a phone line attached to the rcvr it allows you to order to an extent. once it gets to that Purchase limit....your cut off and it gives you a 7** message....its because the system hasnt downloaded your purchases and billed you for them. try plugging your rcvr up to a phone line over night...see what happens.

From the official release notes from 0x1EA, release 1/16/2008:

http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=116229

"IP Callback: The ethernet/internet connection, will now be used for communication back to DirecTV for: PPV purchases, GameLounge, and other items that the phone line was required for"

As long as the receiver passes the Internet connectivity tests and you can get On Demand, it should work. If not, maybe there is some setting at the account level that must be made to enable this feature.

He is not inquiring about the on demand part to my knowledge. He is just trying to order a PPV movie and can not. You dont have to have a phone line hooked up for that. Just order it off the net and good to go.

My oldest HR20 has a similar problem. I can hook it up with a land line phone line and it will not allow PPV buys. I spent an afternoon on the phone with tech support and they pinged every signal imaginable to the receiver and nothing worked. Eventually they assumed there is something with the "dialer" inside the box.

This reciever used to work fine for PPV but just stopped sometime in the last couple months. The test sequence always fails at the phone test as well and says no dial tone but if I hook a phone to the same line and wall jack it works fine. DirecTV offered to replace the DVR but I have it hooked to an external hard drive and didn't want to lose the ability to get at everything on the hard drive by hooking it to another receiver so I decided to keep the existing receiver, Ijust don't order PPV on this box.

This box also fails to connect to the internet as well so no DoD for this box. The other HR20 upstairs has no problems hooking up to the interet and receiving on demand or PPV.

That usually means that a surge on the phone line has fried the modem. The Old Dial up computer modems used to be pretty durable. The newer modems fry very easily.

A Standard Surge protector only protects against power surges. You need one with modem protection where the phone line goes through the surge protector to protect the modem.

Surge protectors wear out gradually as they absorb surges until they are useless. A good surge protector will have warning lights to tell you when the protection is gone. They will also have warning lights if there is a wiring fault at the socket such as open ground, neutral or reversed polarity.

I had a customer that went through a power supply every month until I suggested getting a tester for that outlet. Once the electrician fixed the outlet, no more power supply problems.

Could electrical wiring problems be why some have so much trouble with their HRxx DVRs?

I understand he's not trying to get on demand. The OP did mention he has the HR2x networked via a wireless adapter. As of the January software release of 0x1EA, his receiver should not need a phone connection to order PPV's since it supports "IP Phone Home".

My point was, if he is able to pass the network connectivity tests *and* he has no trouble accessing on-demand, then we can rule-out problems locally within the receiver and it must be something at D*'s end, such as his account not being configured to accept IP Phone Home instead of POTS Phone Home.

It is something that DirecTV needs to do. You will have to call Customer Service (sorry) and ask that they enable interactive PPV. Some CSRs don't know what that is and some do. If they don't know, don't waste time or - worse - let them start trying to fix it. Hang up and try again.

Sounds like you nailed it. I will call them later and try to get this done. It must have been working at some point because I was able to order PPV and OnDemand up until now. DTV must have changed something on their end. There is not even a U BUY option anywhere when I record a PPV movie or tune to a PPV channel.
