Does this sound right, just got off the phone with Direct Tv and if I want to change my standard receiver to HD they want me to sign up for 2 more years.

I would get it if they gave me something good but SD to HD with no DVR seems a bit much.

Thinking of going over to Dish. I went through 2 supervisors which probably means I talked to three agents.

Yep, pretty much any new hardware equals a new 2 year agreement.

Good luck with that:lol:

IIRC, dish does the same thing when you upgrade... there not really being jerks, it's just there way of making sure that they don't send you new stuff and you quit 2 months later.. and if you would not send there stuff back ( not saying you would or would not) then there out money...

I already have HD service, and i want to change one of my sd receivers for one HD, would i have to sign for a 2 year commitment as well?
If you upgrade, change them all to HD and avoid this in the future.

Wow seems everyone is okay with the big corporate company sticking it to someone that just wants to change a box.

If i commit for 2 more years they can do anything they want price wise and I have to suck it up. Even if they increase the price by $10 a month that is $240, which is more that the receiver is worth.

If they were giving me the latest and greatest that would be one thing but this is a HD receiver not a DVR

He was being sarcastic. With that said some people don't get discounts at all on equipment and are still required to do the 2 year agreement. The reason why has been talked about many times but the bottom line is that it's cheaper for DIRECTV and you for the long run.

SD to HD is an upgrade...they give you a large discount on the equipment in exchange for that 2 year commitment. It's quite reasonable.
They aren't sticking it to anyone....as CCarncross points out you are getting a large discount on the equipment. You aren't simply changing a box....you are UPGRADING a box from SD to HD. It MIGHT be different if you wanted a H24 instead of your current H23 but you are going SD to HD on this box.

Which they will proceed to charge me for every month. If you think you are getting anything for free from them you are quite mistaken. Again, I could see it if I was getting something decent but this is simply a receiver.

Like beauty this is in the eye of the beholder.
They will charge you no more for this receiver than they did for the SD receiver per month.

Of course they are going to charge you each month, if you have more than one receiver. Would you rather pay $6 a month for them to mirror the programming from your main receiver/access card or would you like to pay an additional programming fee of ~$70 (depending on your package) so you could watch the same programming on your second receiver?

They charge you $6 a month to mirror your programming. You only pay this if you have more than one receiver.

BTW, I never mentioned anything about getting something for free. You seem to be the one implying you should be getting something for free.

Well you could....

1. Not do anything and remain at the status quo
2. Upgrade your receivers to HD receivers and extend your commitment for two years.
3. "Get something decent" and get your equipment upgraded to HD DVR's or HMC and get your commitment extended
4. Get Dish and get your commitment extended two years.
