When I change from HD programing to SD programing I do not get a picture....Tonight I was watching ESPNHD Monday Countdown and I attempted to change to a SD program and all I get is a black screen... To correct this problem all I have to do is channel up or down one channel and then I receive a picture on SD programming on any SD channel... When I attempt to go back to HD programming on any channel I get a searching for signal 771... I will then channel either up or down one channel in the HD programing channels and I once again have HD programing.... This is a pain to do but the real problem came at 9:00PM tonight when we were watching ESPNHD Monday Night Football and the HR20 attempted to recorded a SD program.... I checked the recording and found it was searching for a signal and once again I changed to a SD channel and channeled one channel up and the recording started...Is anyone else having this problem....I am on my second HR20 in two days bought one at BB returned it and now on the second receiver...Same problem with both receivers... Any suggestions will be appreciated... I do not receive HD LCLs waiting on OTA to kick in....

Is your HR20 connected to the TV via HDMI or component? If it is HDMI try and see if component gives you the same problems.

I am not famililiar with D* STBs, but on my cable STB, when I go between HD and SD, or between any 2 channels with differing scan rates, the box changes the channel, and the TV is still set to the previous scan mode. For example, you are watching 1080i and switching to 480i. For a second the TV is still in 1080i until it detects the new scan mode, and it switches to 480i and the picture is fine.

Maybe your tv is not detecting the new scan mode because the TV isn't chaning channels, the box is, but you would think the manufacturer would design it better than that.

I had a problem similar to yours the other day. I thought my TV was broken. I unplugged both the box and the TV for a minute and let everything reboot and the problem fixed itself.

If that doesn't work, just set your STB to only output 1080i, ONLY. That way, no matter what you are watching, it will be converted to 1080i, and your tv will always be in 1080i and you'll never have to switch modes.

I've done a lot of comparisons of picture quality, and my STB does a great job upconverting. I can not tell any difference in PQ between 480i and that SD picture upconverted.

Good Luck.
