There's something so unbelievably warming about EchoStar Chairman and CEO, Charlie Ergen: He loves to talk, which leads to some really high-grade quotes that everybody loves to read.

On Thursday's (May 9) "Retailer Charlie Chat," Ergen decided to refresh retailers' minds on the meaning of "The Merger" and how it will impact DISH Network dealers. "I think the key thing is what does the merger mean to you? I know you probably don't care so much about how it affects EchoStar or Hughes, but you certainly care about how it affects you," Ergen said. "The biggest thing is that it allows our industry to continue to grow and compete."

Charlie chimed-in with comments covering the current StarBand situation (which hasn't changed drastically), next month's release of the DishPVR 721, DISH Network's relationship with RadioShack and WalMart and a number of other retailer-pertinent issues.

Ultimately, Ergen reassured retailers that they should prepare for growth…soon. "What does it mean to you in terms of how you to build your business? I think there's going to be any number of areas where you can build your business in terms of what you need to do, but first and foremost I think you have to prepare for growth," Ergen said. "You want to make sure that you focus on a few businesses. It could be sales and it could be service and installation. It could also be installs and upgrades.

"We know that we're going to have to spend several billion dollars to upgrade our current customers," Ergen continued. "It's not going to be the consumer electronics big retailers, it's going to be the people who are local and are in the area. The successful retailer may do any or all of those different things and some people may just focus on sales, some people may just focus on installs and upgrades and some people may focus on all those things."
