I'm thinking of getting satellite for the sole purpose of watching Houston sports teams on FoxSW, wondering what would be the cheapest way to do this.

Thanks

See http://www.mydish.com/support/rsn-maps for coverage maps and other information directly from DISH.

Fox Sports SW is available in the dark gray area as part of packages starting at $49.99 per month (AT120+).

However depending on where you live and what teams and games you want to watch you may find the games blacked out. Use the "Team Maps" tab on the page linked above to see the areas covered by each team and the "Blackout" tab for more information on blackouts.

Not only that, but since it is a RSN it is one of Dish's infamous "Part-time HD Channels". It is available all the time in SD, but only in HD when Dish determines that a popular enough game is on to warrant the HD coverage.

In probably yes_sir's second post on 04/05/11 he states he has moved to North TX. and can't get Astros. It looks like a year later he is looking for a miracle, with out any follow up posting I would guess he probably qualifies for Dallas sports and knows Houston is out.:):):)

Miracle, no. But what sucks is since I live in north texas I can't watch the Astros even if I buy the mlb package .... I tired and a no go since I'm in their "viewing" area. So I'm at the point of where either a)I don't watch them or b)find a creative way to do so

Hence me asking for advice. Thanks for all the replies.

I'm in Lubbock, and we predominately get the Rangers baseball games, but if there is no conflict with the schedule we get maybe 1/4 of the Astros games.

I have dropped down to AT120 so I am not carrying the FSSW , but in reality the Astros are on Fox Sports Houston, which is a subset of FSSW.

This market is even more fragmented for basketball, With the Spurs, Rockets and Mavericks, truly a mess.

This territory is very large and MLB needs to devise better ways of serving its fanbase.

Have you looked at getting MLB.TV through your computer or set-top-box?

I know it is available on the PS3.

yes but I'm in the blackout area for mlb.tv since I'm technically in their broadcast area, but like I said I maybe get 20% of the games on tv.

If you do a search online there are ways to get the team you want with MLBTV............

Also, if you are sure they aren't carried on an alternate channel call MLBTV at the number that says if you think the blacked out team is in error. Explain that you do not get anything but a few games a year, see what they say. I have first hand knowledge of someone getting the Marlins that way.

I do see the Astros in the guide in the 444 range, can't check for how often because the first games are not on Fox Houston at all, a couple only on Root apparently, and the season starts near the end of the 8 day guide.

There is only one Astros game on Dish this week, of course the regular season for them doesn't start until Friday, but the Fox regional sports networks do not carry all the games anyway.

Unless you live in the southeast part of Texas, you will have trouble getting more than 25% of the Astros games, because most of the rest of the MLB area is covered by Fox Sports SouthWest and they mostly carry the Rangers.

MLB network reads your IP address and determines where you are through that, so unless you are savvy enough to be able to spoof your IP address, you are stuck.

Being in north Texas puts you square in the Rangers backyard, so that's what you get.

If the Astros were performing better on the field, maybe they would get more play on FSSW, not be relegated to FSHouston primarily.

FSSW carries about 75%, maybe more I haven't done a detailed check, of the Rangers games and the rest are on the local TV station KTXS channel 21.

Similar with the Astros, some of their games are only on local TV and there are stations aroud the state that may carry it in other locals.

We have a local sub-channel that carries the Rangers KTXS 21 games locally from time to time.
