Nope, no way to do either.

Why do you ask?
Without violating anything, lets just say that under certain conditions people can be required to have all their receivers dial in for verification purposes. Trust me I just spent hours running phone wiring I didnt want to do but I didnt have much choice. I can always cal D* and verify its called home but figured I would see if I could avoid that.

If you have it hooked up to your network and allowed to access the Internet there is no need for the phone line. In that situation the call home is done via network.

It's not on the network yet but will be in another day (ran cat 5e while running phone line) still need to hookup the jack near the etherswitch. The conditions laid out for me require phone hookup whether its still gonna dial ever while internet connected I don't know, just doing as I am told.

The only other thing I can tell you is you can sit there and watch the lights on the DVR constantly. If it's making a call in the record light turns a different color than it is for record. But still no way to verify if it was successful or not.

Or if you watch your phone and it has a "in use" notice and you see it go "in use" and you know no one is using the phone.

OK, maybe I am just missing the point but why wouldn't the "phone" test in the System Test satisfy what you are looking for? I believe that this dials out with the modem and verifies that it can connect with D*. If I am off track, sorry.

The phone test does verify dial tone, for example, running the test with the line unplugged results in FAILED for the phone test, while with a telephone line connected, it will PASS/SUCCEED if the line is working.

I thought that it actually connected with D* and did some basic handshake to verify the phone connection (more than just listen for the dial tone) could establish a data link but I don't remember why I thought that was the case.

It's a fairly quick test, so I don't know what it actually does, but it does listen for a dial-tone. I also know that the RED light does NOT turn on during the test, so anyone looking for confirmation that the LED works should not be alarmed not to see it during the test.
