Clamp-on satellite dish mount

I posted about this earlier in the year or late last year (can't remember) but I can't seem to find anyone who has actually used this product.

I may be mistaken but I thought I read on here that this was not a DirecTV approved item. Can someone confirm or refute that? If I was to purchase this on my own would DirecTV do the installation for me? I'm in an apartment and we have a "no-drilling" rule so this is pretty much my only hope to get a Slimline up. Also, if I hired a private installer to do the job would this void my service protection agreement?

Whether or not they will do the install might come down to the individual tech.
Would you put it on the eave or on the railing?

Are you a current customer or not. If you are a local installer could do the upgrade but he would probably charge you a bit since he won't be payed by D* [ rules of the HSP/Retailer game] if you aren't then the local dealer would be responsible for the install but you would also be covered by the protection plan.

We have seen D* video's for under eave mounts, not sure if it is the one and whether or not they approve it for railings.

Yes, I am a current customer. All the inside wiring is done. I have a 3LNB dish on a vent pipe with the metal attachment and that has worked great. The Slimline is too heavy for that, though.

It would go on one of the slats coming down from the roof (not the fascia board but the slats...don't know exactly what they are called...it's displayed on the brochure). It would also take a pretty tall ladder to get there since this is a two-story building with garages on the first floor and the actual units on the second floor.

The only problem I see with that is it doesn't give any mention of weight support. The 5lnb dish weighs 30+lbs, factor in high winds and it needs to support at least 100lbs to be safe.

The brochure used to show the old sidecar AT9 dish attached to this mount but it looks like they've removed that. We don't get much harsh weather here in Southern California, but like you I do wonder about this product. Steren seems like a reputable company but you know what they say about something looking too good to be true.

The fact I haven't heard of anybody using it also makes me wonder a bit.

(Edit: This flier does still show it with the AT9, but it takes a while to load.

If this doesn't work I really can't think of any other options for me to get the Slimline up here. I don't have a balcony. The roof is slanted. There are some unattached garages with flat roofs but that would mean running cable along the driveway and that's not going to happen.

I'd say get two or three. That way at least you can put one monopole to add some support.

Personally, I wouldn't put a Ka/Ku dish on this mount, though I give them points for creativity. The mount itself wouldn't be stiff and sturdy enough by itself without the two support arms, and I just wouldn't trust it to carry the weight/wind load of the dish.

Try to imagine the worst thing that could happen if the dish were to fall from the mounting height you're talking about: hitting a car, hitting a kid, etc. There would be lots of liability to go around. As an installer, I wouldn't be comfortable enough with that mount in an apartment setting. YMMV.

My sister recently had an install at her new home and they used a mount that looked exactly like that. They used it for the international dish though, on a rafter tail, under the eave. The KaKu dish was mounted to the stucco with a longer J-arm. The install was done by a DirecTV in-house tech. It was a very clean install with no problems (so far).

I know someone who has an AU9 attached to his apartment railing, just like in that pic. He used to have an AT9 on there!

It might work in some angles, but that image showing it clamped to a rafter tail seems awfully optimistic to me. Over time, wind will move it bit by bit and one day you'll come out and find your dish on the ground. If you do decide to do this, better have a drip loop long enough to reach the ground, or else you don't know what the wires will do to the house when it falls.

Those are actually one of the 2 under eave mounts that are D* approved. Those clamp mounts are extremely sturdy. I was hanging of the J-mast that was attached to it. I just wanted to see how well they would hold

If you can get the monopoles on the mast also that will keep the dish from going anywhere.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to get approval from the building manager but I don't see it being an issue. He actually said I could cut the old TV antenna that is built into the roof and try to attach it there somehow, but I think this is a better option. Plus it will keep people off the roof that was just replaced a couple years ago.

BTW, if you're in So Cal wanna make some money installing it?

If you in So Cal then probably tech will have a mount like this so you dont have to spend money. Before install you can call and ask csr to put a note on your work order saying that you need an under eave clamp/shadow mount.

By the way mount is very sturdy when supported by monopoles, only four lag bolts used (for monopoles), and unlike other under eave mounts it allows mast to be perfectly plumb and level.

I appreciate the input. This place is a godsend. :joy:

My question is how to get monopoles attached without doing any drilling. Someone suggested getting a second clamp mount and attaching the monopoles to that, but I would think there has to be some other way to do it.

I should also clarify that I've had some issues with Connect Television, who is the local HSP. Took them four times to get my original install correct so I'm a little wary of dealing with them again, especially with a somewhat "specialized" install like this, both due to the mount and due to the height of the roof.

On a railing sure but on the eave area I doubt you make that work though. But for the monopole I wouldn't drill all the holes for the under eave. Not sure what way the dish is pointed but you could probably get away with just one monopole.

LOL, did that one. combination of bolts, spare mast bases and self tapping screws. :lol:

The dish will be pointed back over the roof.
