Clip on HD Antenna for Slimline?

1129 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  webby_s
Hey everyone..

I've seen a lot of postings on adding an indoor antenna and such to get some HD signals.. I looked at some websites that show tower locations andmost of my locals are within 10-25 miles..

Even though we're a decent sized market, we are on the lower end of the DMA totem pole, so not holding my breath for HD locals on Direct.

When I had my dish installed last Oct, the installer was going to put on a clip on antenna to my dish and swore I'd get my locals and those out of the twin cities (70+ miles away).. I asked him to double check and he called his boss that told him he was crazy. He then said I'd have my locals in HD in no time, so he said to wait.

Well, been waiting and wanting to see the locals in HD.. most are on the same tower or close together (with the terrain around here, we have tower farms here and there).. so, same mileage and same basic direction.

I've looked and looked, but does anyone have any good ideas for a clip on antenna or something to get my locals in HD? Most posts here are for inside HD antennas..

Any help would be great!!!

I've been doing some digging.. I only see a clipon for the small round dish.. The installer said he had a 'truckload' of ones for the slimline.. Any installers have a clue what model he's talking about? It appears that guy is no longer with Directv.. nor anyone around here who was (all the pickups and trucks are shiney new trucks that hve nice painted Directv logos on them.. sweet)...

Ideas? I know there are a ton of smart ones out there!
I have not seen "clip on" OTA antennas for the Slimline dish. But those clip on antennas are junk. Don't expect much if you're 10+ miles away.

This one works with the base of a regular dish. But I am sure it can be made to work with a ka/ku.

Thanks! I'll take a peak at that.. I know the installer stated that it's easy to hook up an external antenna to the dish for the whole house.. do I need to run another peice of coax from the dish to the Zinwell in my house?

Be warned though, those s-tubes the attach to the back of the mast are a royal pain in the @ss to install and level out. First time i put one on it took me about 20 minutes just for the mounting.

Oh and stay away from UFO shaped off-air antennae, we used to install them and the range is about 12-15 miles on a good day.

You can't diplex OTA into the zinwell. There are ways to OTA with HD though. There is plenty of reading around here.

Agreed. Also, the clip-on ones use internal diplexers to work, which would make them incompatible with the 5-LNB HD dish to begin with.

But most importantly, they're junk.

Thanks.. I've seen some of the omni directions ones that are like 20" by 20" or so.. says they get they 30-40 miles.. I just need it to get about 20ish due south.. I guess I can find and mount an outdoor one.. Just have to figure out how to share it among the house.. (mostly just wanting my locals in HD. like everyone else here :) )

Thanks for the info..! I'll keep on hunting
xrobmn, I just PM'd you. Take a look at what I sent you.

I have also seen around the boards a guy had a great "clip-on" antenna. It was in his sig and I wanted to see what type it was and I google imaged it and there was a pic of it bolted to the tube going up to the dish. I will look around and see if can find that person.
