Hi, this is my first post but I have spent alot of time reading and learning from many of the posts here.

Here is my problem with CC. I upgraded (?) to the HR20 to receive the local channels in HD. My girls friend is hearing impaired and needs the CC.
When I'm watching the the local HD channels the CC is gibberish and when watching some of the network HD programs,ie: Greys Anat., Survivor, etc. the CC is missing. When I switch to the SD versions the CC is fine.
I have the HR20 set to CC and "Service 1".
Is this a problem with the HR20, DirecTV or the local HD transmisson?
And what is the "Service1,2,3 etc?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Chuck,

The Closed Captioning on the HR20 is mostly useless. For all intents and purposes, it HAS NO CLOSED CAPTIONING ABILITY.

For those who wish to differ with me, mind you I said for intents and purposes. My brother is deaf (as he likes to say, he has no hearing to be impaired) and NEEDS closed captioning. When sentences are missed, words and letters cut off, or lines are either too garbled to display or disapprear off the screen to quickly to be read, a show cannot be followed.

Too often watching closed captioning on the HR20 is too frustrating to attempt, and he tells me to forget it.

This must be fully fixed SOON.

I'll agree that when the unit first came out, the CC was unusable. It was combing spanish & english and all sorts of other issues.

Since about 2 upgrades ago, there has been a huge improvement. I admit it is not perfect, but it is usable.

As for the OP, I don't get ABC or FOX locals in HD, but I haven't had any issues with CBS or NBC.

No. It is not usable. You cannot follow dialogue when important information is being dropped or garbled or scrolls by too fast to read it. It is NOT usable to the deaf.

If you mute the volumn and try to follow with CC you will find in the vast majority of cases, CC is not usable. It really needs to be fixed.

Compare it to any decent OTA TV and you will see how CC is supposed to work.

We actually did this... if you use the Svideo or RCA jacks on the non digital channels the CC passes through. So I watched BOTH on one TV to see what was missing. Not only are words and letters cut off or garbled or scroll by too quickly, but the HR20 CC is misplaced. When normal TV CC is centered or at the top of the screen, the HR20 doesn't it place it where the encoders intended. This also happens when the CC should be under the speaker. It's a little off so sometimes you're not sure who is talking.

Closed Captioning needs a major overhaul on the HR20 to work properly.

More and more people are switching to HD as the prices of HDTVs come down. Deaf and H.I. make up almost 9% of the population. This isn't something that can be ignored, and since this new patch obviously doesn't address the closed captioning issues, I'm beginning to think DirecTV just doesn't see this as a priority.

Whew...thanks for the replies. Glad (well not glad) to see it's just not my situation except I wish no one had this problem.

So what is the "Service#" listings in the CC menu?

I believe those are like CC1, CC2, etc, on SD tuners, except digital tuners have more options. I've yet to see them used, however, even in SD tuners.

A button on the remote should be enabled to access CC directly without having to go into the Menu. Those of us who use the CC for short periods occasionally would really appreciate this convenience.

Has anyone been able to get CC working again?

When we got our HR 20-700 two weeks ago it worked fairly well on all CC channels, but this week it stopped.

My wife and I are both hearing impaired. CC is a must and we have been extremely disappointed in the quality of CC on the HR20.

It only seems to be a major problem on the HD Local channels. My theory is that it's somehow related to MPEG4 vice MPEG2. Whenever they activate OTA, I'm hoping I can get better CC from the OTA HD boadcast vice D*.

Here's what we're experiencing:

1) English mixed with Spanish when we first got the unit last week...no repeat instances
2) The words are on "speed"; they appear & quickly disappear before you can read them.
3) The captioning is sometimes at the top of the screen and half the sentence is off the screen entirely. I've found that if you hit pause and then play, the captioning will realign itself to the bottom of the screen where it belongs.
4) When watching NCIS, this week, the beginning of the sentence was at the bottom of the screen...and the next sentence was just above it; requiring you to read it backwards from bottom to top.

I hope they get this fixed!

Could our loss of all CC be related to the OxEB update that came down this week?
