Is the maximum length of coax from the dish to the receiver different for HD programming? A installer told a friend that he couldn't go over 30' and refused to complete the install. That seemed very short to me, is that correct or are the maximum lengths documentated somewhere?

That is a bunch of baloney. With quality wire there isn't much difference in regards to cable distance between HD and SD. 125-150ft is about the maximum recommended distance.
