One article I read said that his leaving might not affect Community's run as the ensemble cast could manage without him. He is definitely not the star of the show.

He's not the star, no, but he is a big factor in the comedy of the show. Think of it as Happy Days without Ritchie.

Always wondered why he stayed as long as he did, seems like all we have heard since either late S1 or early S2 is him complaining. I was under the impression this was the end no mater what. NBC obviously doesn't like it and I'd think Chevy's name was the only thing keeping it afloat.

No way I think the rest of the cast minus Chevy are what's keeping the show afloat. I never really cared much for his character and after seeing what the guy is actually like in real life I now hate his character. I mean this guy hasn't been relevant in a good while yet he still acts as if he's royalty.
