I just found out about an SWM8 and what it can do for me. I have a two story house with dish to be mounted on the eve. On the same side of the house on the ground level, there's a cable box with all 6 home runs of cable in it and it's on the outside of a garage wall. I have 3 HR20-700s and will be getting 3 other standard receivers.

1. Which dish do I need for this?

2. What components do I need and where exactly do they go...inside or outside?

3. Which receivers will be compatible with the SWM8?

You need a 5LNB Ka/Ku dish. Not sure if the tech is going to install it on the eave

In your case since the home runs terminate on the outside the SWM will go on the outside. The power inserter will go on the inside

Your HR20s support it [ though it might be marked FTM on the back of the IRD] and the current standard D12s also do.

Remember that SWM8 modules will not be provided for residential customers. Nor can CSRs promise you SWM technology.

In your case though since you have a total of 9 tuners one of the boxes will have to run of a legacy port if you do obtain a SWM8 modul.

First off, this is doable, but you'll have to have at least one standard receiver connected to one of the "legacy" ports. This is because a SWM8 supports up to eight tuners. Your three HR20s add up to six tuners, so you'd have room for either two H2x HD receivers, two D12 standard receivers or one of each. After that, you can use the legacy ports on the SWM8 to add up to two non-SWM enabled receivers

Depending on where you get your locals, you'll either need a Slimline 5 (locals from 119) or a Slimline 3 dish. The Slimline 3 dish is just rolling out right now, so it may not be available in your area even if you can utilize it.

I'd suggest reading the DBSTalk First Look on the SWM, found here: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=78249

All good BUT:
since there are three legacy ports, three non SWM receiver/tuners can be connected.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, I can use 8 outputs on the SWM8 for 4 HD DVRs and 2 Legacy outputs for 2 Standard def, SWM compatible boxes...is that correct?
Everything is correct except the receivers connected to the legacy outputs do not need to be SWM capable. They can be but any receiver will work (at least for everything except KA lo MPEG4 HD channels).
